Although experimental evidence plays an essential role in science, as Franklin argues, there is no algorithm or simple set of criteria for ranking or evaluating good experiments, and therefore no definitive answer to the question. Experiments can, in fact, be good in any number of ways: conceptually good, methodologically good, technically good, and pedagogically important. And perfection is not a requirement: even experiments with incorrect results can be good, though they must, he argues, be methodologically good, providing good reasons for belief in their results. Franklin revisits the same important question he posed in his 1981 article in the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, when it was generally believed that the only significant role of experiment in science was to test theories. But experiments can actually play a lot of different roles in science—they can, for example, investigate a subject for which a theory does not exist, help to articulate an existing theory, call for a new theory, or correct incorrect or misinterpreted results. This book provides details of good experiments, with examples from physics and biology, illustrating the various ways they can be good and the different roles they can play.

About the Author
Allan Franklin is professor of physics at the University of Colorado. He has twice been chair of the Forum on the History of Physics of the American Physical Society and has served two terms on the executive council of the Philosophy of Science Association. In 2016, Franklin received the Abraham Pais Prize for History of Physics from the American Physical Society. He is the author of eleven books, including, most recently, Shifting Standards: Experiments in Particle Physics in the Twentieth Century.

Parker discusses how different commentators dealt with a deeply political section of the poem: the damnation of Brutus and Cassius.

About the Author
Stephen Belber has had his play Tape produced around the country, including New York and Los Angeles (by Naked Angels Theater Company), its premiere at the Humana Festival 2000, and at San Francisco s Magic Theater. Tape was made into a film by Richard Linklater, starring Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard and Uma Thurman, and was screened at the Sundance, Venice and Toronto film festivals before being released by Lion s Gate Films. Mr. Belber is a member of Tectonic Theater Project and was one of the three Associate Writers for The Laramie Project, in which he also performed in New York, Laramie, Denver, La Jolla and Berkeley. The play was subsequently made into an HBO movie. A graduate of Juilliard s Playwrights Program, he has received two Le Comte du Nuoy grants, NYC Fringe s 2000 Excellence in Playwriting Award, Trustus Theater s New Play Award 2000 and a 2001 Kennedy Center New Play Development Award. In addition to new plays, he is currently developing a TV pilot for Fox, as well as writing for Law & Order SVU.

About the Author

Matt Doeden was born in southern Minnesota and lived parts of his childhood in Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Madison, Minnesota. He studied journalism at Mankato State University, where he worked at the college newspaper for three years. In his senior year, he served as the paper's Sports Editor, which put him in charge of the entire sports section, the sports writers, and the photographers. He covered mostly college sports, but also the Minnesota Vikings, who held training camp at MSU. His work allowed him to meet and interview people like Dennis Green, Cris Carter, Robert Smith, and more. Matt went on to work as a sports writer for the Mankato paper, and then he got a job as an editor with a small children's publisher called Capstone Press, and in 2003 he decided to start his own business as a freelance writer and editor. Since then Matt has written and edited hundreds of books. Lots of them are on high-interest topics like cars, sports, and airplanes. He also writes and edits on geography, science, and even math.

This has been the best book by far for showing my young kids what their dad does, or used to do, at work, and what life on subs is like, although some of the photo descriptions aren't quite accurate.

We were super surprised upon looking at it the first time to find dad in one of the pictures. :)

Neat Idea - Small Design

We purchased this book for my son who loves anything to do with the military. The pictures and information in the book are neat. Unfortunately, the actual size of this book is TINY. It's my own fault for not noticing the size description before purchasing. I would have preferred a larger sized book for a small child. For the price, I would still buy again since the information it contained was good.

It's a very cute book! My husband is a Submariner and I wanted to get something for him to read to the kids (4ys & 1.5yrs) to let them know what he did at work without being too complex for them to understand. Both kids love it. My oldest likes learning about everything her dad does at work and my youngest just likes looking at the pictures.

The book itself has one or two simple sentences per page so I'm confident that it's something my daughter will be able to learn to read by herself. The price is right, it's perfectly sized for smaller hands, and has wonderfully bright pictures. I definitely recommend it to anyone with kids wanting to learn more about where Dad's gone and what he does while he's on the boat.

Guidotti-Hernández is associate professor of American studies at the University of Texas at Austin and the author of Unspeakable Violence: Remapping U.S. and Mexican National Imaginaries, also published by Duke University Press. Grade 3-6-- Greenberg presents the standard and well-documented details of Johnson's athletic career sandwiched between chapters on how he's dealing with his affliction. While breaking no new ground, the book directly addresses how the the star athlete believes he contracted the AIDS virus and discusses the message he wants to deliver to the public about being at risk. There is no attempt to offer a scientific explanation of HIV or AIDS. While not sloppy in its praise for Johnson, the author uses the term ``hero'' in describing the way he has faced his physical condition. Average-quality black-and-white photographs appear on almost every page. A page of Johnson's college and professional basketball statistics and career highlights is appended. The fantasy world we build around professional athletes took a serious hit when this NBA superstar announced his HIV infection and retirement. Here, a simply phrased account of Johnson's record-breaking basketball career is sandwiched between an analysis of the announcement's immediate effects and a look at his other career as a successful businessman. This is timely but superficial: the ``If I can get it, anyone can'' message is delivered, but readers will not learn much more about AIDS or the AIDS crisis, nor are they directed to other books or organizations that might help.
