The title says it all - Easy ethnic recipes

This is a simple and basic recipe book - there are maybe a dozen recpes, but they include the most traditional Irish dishes (colcannon, champ, soda bread, rhubarb crumble, salmon), so it is perfect for the casual cook, the beginner, or for someone who just wants a traditional St. Patrick's Day dinner.

The recipes are straight-forward, well-written, and easy to follow, and they were very good. They aren't fancy recipes, but they are delicious, and several have become part of our regular week-night meals.

Perfectly Adequate for a Child or Someone Largely Unfamiliar with Cooking

This is more of an American cookbook than an Irish one with recipes for corned beef and sweet and sour brussel sprouts. There are other recipes, such as Colcannon, which likely appear in your other cookbooks with Irish recipes. It's telling that the author an Austrian born, Bavarian trained American. It was interesting though to see the remarkably familiar Nore Salmon Cakes - a recipe almost identical to that served by families with Irish surnames throughout the South, but called "Southern Seafood Patties" or "Southern Salmon Patties." We usually eat ours on a biscuit in the form of a little sandwich. Overall, it is not as interesting as, for instance, Cooking the Thai Way, however; certainly, if you're buying for a child or someone largely unfamiliar with cooking, this book is perfectly adequate.

There are plenty of ethnic cookbooks out there, but most of them don't explain what foods are typically served together and for what meals.
This series tells typical meal patterns for the country as well as giving at least two menu choices for each meal. If there are significant differences in meal patterns between regions, that is noted as well. I have spent hours trying to locate the same information via the internet for countries not covered in this series. Please note that my review is for the original series.

Grade 5-8-In the identical introductions of these titles, photosynthesis and the domestication of plants are discussed. The general outline of each of the following chapters presents early history, cultivation, processing, and importance in diet of the individual foods. Cucumber discusses tomatoes, avocados, eggplants, breadfruits, cucumbers, squashes, and peppers; Grasses covers wheat, rice, corn, millet and barley, and oats and rye. In both books, the two-column texts read easily and are full of informative material. Unfortunately, Cucumber uses occasional unscientific phrases, such as "snatch sunlight," that do not fit with the rest of the text. There are minor problems in Grasses in the chapters concerning wheat and corn. Terminology in these two sections is sometimes ambiguous and misleading. Processes are discussed without stating that implements are used to accomplish the tasks. Both titles include recipes, sidebars, full-color photos (some close-ups), and full-page drawings of the life cycle of each plant. Despite some flaws, these titles deserve serious consideration.

Nelson brings together stories of human rights activism, Mayan identity struggles, coerced participation in massacres, and popular entertainment—including traditional dances, horror films, and carnivals—with analyses of mass-grave exhumations, official apologies, and reparations. She discusses the stereotype of the Two-Faced Indian as colonial discourse revivified by anti-guerrilla counterinsurgency and by the claims of duplicity leveled against the Nobel laureate Rigoberta Menchú, and she explores how duplicity may in turn function as a survival strategy for some. Nelson examines suspicions that state power is also two-faced, from the left’s fears of a clandestine para-state behind the democratic façade, to the right’s conviction that NGOs threaten Guatemalan sovereignty. Her comparison of antimalaria and antisubversive campaigns suggests biopolitical ways that the state is two-faced, simultaneously giving and taking life. Reckoning is a view from the ground up of how Guatemalans are finding creative ways forward, turning ledger books, technoscience, and even gory horror movies into tools for making sense of violence, loss, and the future.

excellent acount on the history of Brazil/Portugal of the 1820's - 30's

This book is one of the first complete and an equilibrated account on the life of Dom Pedro, how he became Brazil's first Emperor and then abdicated to his son (later to become Dom Pedro II) and went back to Portugal to fight against his own brother. It covers not only his personal life and friendships (eg. the famous Chalaça, a life-long friend of Pedro I) but also how his mind was shaped since a little child and how he, despite being himself an authoritarian person, forged the basis for democracy and political stability in Brazil and Portugal.

The book is very well written and highly recommended to anyone who wish to understand the Brazilian and Portuguese history from Brazil's Independence (1822) to his death in 1834.

About the Author
Ed Roberson is a former professor of literature and creative writing at Rutgers University. He has taught at the University of Chicago and Columbia College Chicago. Roberson is the recipient of the Stephen Henderson Critics Award for Achievement in Literature, and has also won an LA Times Book Award, the 2008 Shelley Memorial Award from The Poetry Society of America, the 1998 National Poetry Series Award, and the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writers’ Award.

Both a feminist memoir and a hopeful meditation on healing, it is Josie Méndez-Negrete’s story of how she and her siblings and mother survived years of violence and sexual abuse at the hands of her father.

Méndez-Negrete was born in Mexico, in the state of Zacatecas. She recalls a joyous childhood growing up in the midst of Tabasco, a vibrant town filled with extended family. Her father, though, had dreams of acquiring wealth in el norte. He worked sun-up to sun-down in the fields of south Texas. Returning home to Mexico, his pockets full of dollars, he spent evenings drinking and womanizing.

When Méndez-Negrete was eleven, her father moved the family to the United States, where they eventually settled in California’s Santa Clara Valley. There her father began molesting his daughters, viciously beating them and their mother. Within the impoverished immigrant family, the abuse continued for years, until a family friend brought it to the attention of child welfare authorities. Méndez-Negrete’s father was tried, convicted, and imprisoned.

Las hijas de Juan is told chronologically, from the time Méndez-Negrete was a child until she was a young adult trying, along with the rest of her family, to come to terms with her father’s brutal legacy. It is a harrowing story of abuse and shame compounded by cultural and linguistic isolation and a system of patriarchy that devalues the experiences of women and girls. At the same time, Las hijas de Juan is an inspiring tale, filled with strong women and hard-won solace found in traditional Mexican cooking, songs, and storytelling.

Introduction to Financial Mathematics

In the past few years, introductory courses to Financial Mathematics have become more common. They offer an excellent opportunity for math departments to revitalize their interdisciplinary course offerings. For the students this is a window into a "new world," or a new set of opportunities. This book serves the purpose well.
It is designed for beginning graduate students or advanced undergrads. It offers the right mix of pure and applied. In particular, the authors are familiar with the practical side of the subject; and the appropriate theories from mathematical probability, stochastic integrals, stochastic processed are presented in a logical fashion: advancing logically in steps, good mix of exercises, user-friendly.
The subject of financial mathematics includes option pricing and portfolio optimization, stochastic integration, rigorous methods due to Ito and Feynman-Kac, Monte-Carlo simulation, among others.
The prerequisite include a little measure theory, differential equations, and functional analysis.
With Newton's calculus we solve dynamical equations, integral equations are used in the standard approach to ODE and PDE: Deterministic! Contrast: Ito's lemma! A new feature in stochastic integration (that sets it apart as a subject) is that it addresses mathematical tools needed for dealing with uncertainty in predictions!
