Silver's best yet!

Nicky Silver again makes us laugh at the horrors of everyday life and cry at laughter with RAISED IN CAPTIVITY. As with PTERODACTYLS and FAT MEN IN SKIRTS, Silver puts the fun back into dysfunctional families. RAISED IN CAPTIVITY revolves around SEBASTION BLISS, an emotional celibate who can't get over the death of a lover; a convict with whom SEBASTIAN correponds; BERNADETTE, his sister who is afraid of change; her huband, KIP, who has an obsession with teeth; and SEBASTIAN'S psychologist, HILLARY, who can't deal with her own problems. The first act is set up in a collage of short scenes; and the second is very farcical. A bit tamer than his earlier work but just as good! Psychologically stimulating. Excellent writing. Very funny, and extremely moving.

Dysfunctional families at their most entertaining

Probably one of Silver's most endearing and quirkiest plays. Sebastion Bliss is a young man who has been an emotional celibate ever since his lover died eleven years ago. Following the funeral of his mother, Sebastian finds himself thrust into situations with other humans against his will. His twin sister Bernadette is completely unstable, her husband Kip is a dentist who hates teeth, his psychiatrist Hillary is a self-mutilating basket case, and his only friend is Dylan, a convicted murderer whom he writes letters to and has never seen.
Over the course of the play, characters realize how much or little they need one another, and that there are many different types of love. The play moves from dark comedy to drama and back again with lightning quickness. The final moment between Bernadette and Sebastian is really beautiful and sweet, if unconventional. Unconventional is probably the best way to describe this play. But it's unconventional in the best way possible.

The story of the women's movement in Nicaragua is a fascinating tale of resistance, strategy, and faith. From its birth in 1977 under the Somoza dictatorship through the Sandinista revolution to the fall of the Chamorro government, the Nicaraguan women's movement has navigated revolutionary upheaval, profound changes in government, and rapidly shifting definitions of women's roles in society. Through it all, the movement has surged, regressed, and persevered, entering the twenty-first century a powerful and influential force, stretching from the grassroots to the national level. How did women in an economically underdeveloped Central American country, with little history of organizing, feminism, or democracy, succeed in creating networks, organizations, and campaigns that carved out a gender identity and challenged dominant ideologies (both revolutionary and conservative)? In Still Fighting Katherine Isbester seeks to understand. She analyzes the complex and rich case of Nicaragua in order to learn more about the dynamics of social movements in general and women's organizing in particular. Social movement theory offers Isbester an analytic tool to explain the extraordinary evolution of the Nicaraguan movement. She theorizes that a sustainable movement is composed of three elements: a focused goal, a mobilization of resources, and an identity. The lack of any one of these weakens a social movement. Isbester shows how this theory is borne out by the experience of the Nicaraguan women's movement over the past thirty years. She demonstrates, for example, how the revolutionary government of the 1980s co-opted the women's movement, crippling its ability to create an autonomous identity, choose it own goals, and mobilize resources independent of the state. Hence, it lost legitimacy, membership, and influence. She traces the movement's resurgence in the 1990s, the result of his redifinition as an autonomous movement organized around an identity of care. Still Fighting combines social theory with field research, leading a new wave of scholarship on women in Latin America. Isbester interviewed more than a hundred key participants in the women's movement, in addition to members of the National Assembly, male leaders of other social movements, and women outside the movement. In Nicaragua, she was witness to much political organizing, enabling her to reveal the organic intricacy, as well as the historical path, of a social movement. During the past twenty-five years, women in Nicaragua—an economically underdeveloped country with little history of organizing, feminism, or democracy—succeeded in creating networks, organizations, and campaigns against a variety of governments, including a dictatorship, socialist revolutionaries, and right-wing conservatives. The women’s movement had to emerge in the face of—and respond to—oppression, war, natural disasters, human rights abuses, and profound material and social deprivation, as well as the problems of patriarchy and machiavellian politics.

Katherine Isbester traces the history of the Nicaraguan women’s movement from its founding in 1977 through the year 2000. She chronicles the movement’s contribution to the successful revolution of 1979; the weakening of the movement in the 1980s, when it was co-opted by the revolutionary government; and its redefinition and remobilization in the 1990s. Combining social theory with field research, Still Fighting leads a new wave of scholarship on women in Latin America.

About the Author
Katherine Isbester earned a Ph.D. in Latin American studies from the University of Toronto and taught there for several years. She has published widely on Latin American politics and gender issues and is currently on leave researching the politics of health care in Central America.

At the same time, she presents a historical analysis of the ways race, class, and gender shaped experiences and perceptions of the environment as well as environmental activism and the construction of environmental discourses. Throughout her analysis, Taylor illuminates connections between the social and environmental conflicts of the past and those of the present. She describes the displacement of people of color for the production of natural open space for the white and wealthy, the close proximity between garbage and communities of color in early America, the cozy relationship between middle-class environmentalists and the business community, and the continuous resistance against environmental inequalities on the part of ordinary residents from marginal communities.

Tracing the history of the black dandy forward to contemporary celebrity incarnations such as Andre 3000 and Sean Combs, Miller explains how black people became arbiters of style and how they have historically used the dandy’s signature tools—clothing, gesture, and wit—to break down limiting identity markers and propose new ways of fashioning political and social possibility in the black Atlantic world. With an aplomb worthy of her iconographic subject, she considers the black dandy in relation to nineteenth-century American literature and drama, W. E. B. Du Bois’s reflections on black masculinity and cultural nationalism, the modernist aesthetics of the Harlem Renaissance, and representations of black cosmopolitanism in contemporary visual art.

Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina's Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other's lives. THE DIXIE SWIM CLUB focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years. Sheree, the spunky team captain, desperately tries to maintain her organized and "perfect" life, and continues to be the group's leader. Dinah, the wisecracking overachiever, is a career dynamo. But her victories in the courtroom are in stark contrast to the frustrations of her personal life. Lexie, pampered and outspoken, is determined to hold on to her looks and youth as long as possible. She enjoys being married--over and over and over again. The self-deprecating and acerbic Vernadette, acutely aware of the dark cloud that hovers over her life, has decided to just give in and embrace the chaos. And sweet, eager-to-please Jeri Neal experiences a late entry into motherhood that takes them all by surprise. As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the challenges (men, sex, marriage, parenting, divorce, aging) that life flings at them. And when fate throws a wrench into one of their lives in the second act, these friends, proving the enduring power of "teamwork," rally `round their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction. We performed this play to standing ovations.

This play, although some designate as a "chick flick" because it is an all-woman cast, is not. We just performed this play 5 nights to audiences who howled and cried -- and gave us standing ovations every performance. One reviewer here said it has no depth. Not true if you really understand women's friendships and life's challenges. So many in our audience told us how much they identified with the characters, situations, even certain lines. This play has power in its humor and poignant moments throughout, especially in Act 2. And the men who came praised it as highly as the women. Our cast wanted our production never to end. We fell in love with our characters ... If you have an opportunity to see it anywhere, DO.

Basic Water Info

Very basic look at how people utilize water for such things as agriculture, fishing, transportation, hydroelectricity, and washing. Each page contains one large, colorful photograph and one simple, easy to read sentence. At the end, one page explains the difference between total water and drinking water. There is a nice chart, too.

There are a few water facts that might be useful in teaching water conservation. There is a photo glossary and index.

Cool pictures and full of information!

The book is about giant meat eaters - how they hunted, where they lived, how they died and also how the paleontologists studied their fossils.
The book is full of so much information and facts about the meat eaters. I learned the T Rex has sharp teeth like the size of bananas. One or two bites can crush many dinosaur bones. Big meat eaters can eat small plant and big necked dinosaurs. I also learned that predators sneak on plant eaters and how dinosaurs died when an asteroid crashed into the Earth and when they made the volcanoes erupt.
My favorite part of this book was the illustrations which shows how the dinosaurs looked and I loved the glossary page where I can find the meaning of the words from the book. It is very interesting when they tell how the paleontologists did their fossil studies.
This book will be attract other kids because it has lot of cool pictures which shows the size and time of the dinosaurs, where the dinosaurs lived.

Standard GED preparation materials are aften not enough to prepare a student to both pass a state GED examination and score well on college placements tests. Too frequently, the GED completing student scores in a range that places him in a series of remedial English and math courses for which he has to pay, but for which he will receive no course credit. Cliff's Clast Preparation Guide is a solution to this problem, markedly observed in populations targeted by welfare reform in the U.S. The text of Clast goes beyond the GED books to cement 9th-12th grade learning and build upon it step-by-step, with clear prose, problems, examples and graphics. All this challenges students and engages them in more consistent long-term study. The language arts and math skill building, along with problem-solving and critical thinking components give students what they need to succeed - the ability to figure things out rather than a dependency upon memorization. I recommend that all GED and H.S. educators pick up a copy of this Guide to help build a bridge for your students to cross to college. Don't let them fall in the river and drown.

great book for kids and adults

This is a great book. It is an authentic source children's book teaching the harvesting of maple syrup and sugar. Porky White, who the book features, is an elder sho has passed away. This book captures his story of sugar making. No romantic Indian images here. Real people participating in the traditional way of life. I think this is a great book for kids and adults. Would be good in the classroom.

Sugar people

I really liked this book and when my son was studying native americans in his 2nd grade class, they used this book. It describes how the indians worked the sugar bush and how it was part of the balance of nature. Also,it explored how they created something that others wanted so that they could trade. This book has lots of colored pictures and has a glossary. It is a great intro to doing research. I'd recommend this book for 2-5th grade students who want to know more about how diverse indian culture can be.

Nice book about contemporary Native Americans making syrup

As a homeschooling mother and maple syrup producer, I like to find quality children's books that talk about syrup. This one does that, and also tells the story of a Native American man who collects sap and makes syrup in modern times. It's a nice story of community and is respectful of this Native American tradition. My 6-year-old daughter enjoys telling other people the heartwarming legend of Ininatig in which the tree teaches the hungry Native Americans how to make syrup from it.
