Totally involving story with a teary-eyed ending

I was swept right up into Rachel and Jacob's story as they fought to find a balance between the love in their hearts and the community they cherished. Nearing the end, I began to fear that they couldn't possibly find a way to have it all, until Annette Blair took this seasoned romance reader by surprise and came up with a truly happy and satisfying resolution. Wonderful!

THEE, I LOVE pulled me into another world, making me a part of the community, making me love and care about its members, making me rejoice and making me cry. It's a moving, powerful story.
Jacob Sauder returns to his Amish home, bringing his motherless twins to be raised in a safe and decent place. He had left in despair after his mother's funeral when his brother, Simon, told him Jacob's beloved Rachel wished to be released from their engagement. Jacob finds welcome; his family and community give his children all the love he could wish. Even when he and Rachel, now Simon's wife, realize they were the victim's of Simon's lies, they put the past behind them in respect for Rachel's marriage vows. But Simon's actions make that difficult. He becomes increasingly abusive, berating Rachel for her barrenness. When Jacob finds Rachel hurt in the barn one night, he means only to give her comfort, but his comfort goes too far.
The Amish community Annette Blair describes is a wonderful place with a strong spirit and sense of family, one where children are surrounded by love. She peoples the pages of her book with realistic portrayals of good people with faults, but with real faith. The dialogue and interactions of her characters make the reader a part of it all. There is a wealth of color and detail in her delineation of the culture and daily life of the community.
The plot is an absorbing one of family love and betrayal, of faith and transgression. Above all, it's a tale of love between a man and a woman and their need for forgiveness. The transgression committed by Jacob and Rachel brings anguish to all involved, and yet they are entirely sympathetic characters. Even Simon, who began the trouble with his jealousy and lies, is understandable.
THEE, I LOVE is Annette Blair's third book. She showed promise in her first two, but this book displays a major new talent. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Way too short, not enough recipes... Vegetarian Table series is better.

Honestly, not that impressed with this book. There are only about 25 recipes, if that. Each "region" has between maybe 1 and 3 recipes? Certainly not a "thorough" survey like I was hoping for. I certainly wouldn't pay the MSRP of $25 for it. I paid about $3 via Marketplace + $4 S&H and got what I paid for, apparently.

On the plus side, it's a fairly attractive book, with a number of full color photos (perhaps the reason it's so expensive?). It includes a short list of "special ingredients" and introductory cooking terms.

I don't think this book is intended for the "advanced" cook, as the recipes are pretty straightforward (if also a bit "basic"). It also uses eggs, dairy and cheese which may annoy some hardcore vegetarians (and low-fat or non-fat eaters). How do those qualify as coming from vegetables? I don't get it. Someone's playing fast and loose with the rules, there!

So far this series has not delivered the robustness I'd hoped for a a cookbook, being far too cursory. I much prefer the Vegetarian Table series, which feature a wide array of dishes and go into the culture from which the dishes come. Also some of the dishes are less basic and a bit more "advanced" (though, not all; a good mix of both). I highly recommend Vegetarian Table: Thailand, Mexico and Italy. Others in that series which are probably good (I'll review them once I get them in the next week or two) are Japan, France, India, North Africa and America

She distanced herself from him during sixth grade, when she was called a "fag hag" for being friends with him. Roddy left school after being brutally attacked by bullies, and she hadn't seen him since. Now he's back, and though he now calls himself Rick, he still attracts the same negative attention. Maxie finds herself liking Rick, but soon discovers that dangerous waters lurk beneath his surface. Meanwhile, her cousin, Sean, is having a secret relationship with a popular boy who has yet to come out. She also feels alienated from her best friend, who has become a stoner snowboarder. While Maxie's voice captures the insecurity and wish to fit in that color the adolescent years, other characters come across as one-dimensional. This book is strongest when dealing with Maxie's questions about how she should pick her friends, but tries to cover too many topics in too few pages, bringing up issues like bullying, coming out, violence against gays, white privilege, racism, child abuse, school violence, and drug use. While some of the themes are addressed more fully than others, many subplots are not satisfactorily resolved by story's end. About the Author
Pat Schmatz has supported her writing habit with a variety of jobs, including forklift operator, janitor, fitness consultant, stable hand, secretary, and shipping clerk. She is a 2003 recipient of a fellowship grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her first YA novel, Circle the Truth, was published in Fall 2007. She lives in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin.

Great Book

Pat's a cousin of mine and when I was at my grandparents house for the holidays I saw the book lying on the table. I picked it up because I had finished the other book I brought with me. I couldn't put it down because I thought it was so great. I felt that as I read the book I could see it happening. I felt that the characters seemed real, unlike in some other books. The topics that "Mousetraps" covers are great. Bullying and homosexuality are two topics that can be very hard to write about. Pat does a great job. I highly recommend this book; especially for junior high and high school students.

Funny AND moving

I loved this book. A friend gave it to me without telling me what it was about. If I'd known it was about bullying, I might have passed, thinking it would be heavy and dark. But it WASN'T! Schmatz does an amazing job of creating such smart, enjoyable characters that you don't even realize you're reading a novel about bullying---you're reading about Maxie and Rick and Sean and Tay, and getting totally absorbed in their lives. And the pencil drawings (Maxie's an artist) add even more layers of humor and depth to the story.

This should be in every high school library---it's entertaining, and really captures what it feels like to be a teenager struggling to figure out relationships. Schmatz resisted what must have been a strong urge to teach a 'lesson,' and instead told a riveting story about real people trying to deal with something that happens in schools every day.

Amazing!

Mousetraps revolves around the theme of friendship, but also someone who was harassed at school who seeks revenge. That is a controversial topic to approach, with all of the school attacks that have taken place. And yet Pat Schmatz not only tackles it but does so with a sensitivity and insight few would have. She examines the complex issues around harassment and bullying at school, and the aftermath of it. It follows a young man who returns to the High School where he had been attacked as a child by a group of other boys. Pat has stated; "The day Columbine happened, Rick began to talk in my head and I felt as if I knew him. The specifics of the story developed from there, but Rick was fully formed from the beginning. Knowing him the way I did, I couldn't possibly present him in any other way." And in doing so she presents a wounded young man who is working to seek his revenge but in the process starts his own true healing.

The story also revolves around the theme of friendship. Maxie and Rick were friends in grade school - they were best friends. They would design elaborate mousetraps, crazy inventions. Rick would come up with the ideas and Maxie would put them to paper. After Rick was attacked at school he disappeared from school and from Maxie's life. Then years later he shows up the first day of High School. To Maxie, in some ways he is the same person, but in other, darker ways, he is not. As Maxie works out her feelings for Rick, things around Rick seem to be unraveling fast. Maxie needs to figure out what she wants and if she can be the one to help Rick.

This story was written with skill and craft. It portrays a conflicted young man on the verge of violence. Yet Schmatz does an amazing job of showing us what can shape someone and push them to the brink of violence, and does it with understanding and grace. It was an amazing book and I highly recommend it to readers of all ages.

The subject matter in the book is appropriate. The author is very detailed in explaining the topics, but the language isn't so technical that you're lost. I bought this book to challenge a human nutrition class as part of a BSN degree program. I haven't taken the test yet, but I feel very well prepared.

The Gold Standard of Viking Romances!

Superbly written story that will draw you in, I promise. This is one of the best Viking romances I have read. And very unusual in some aspects of a story that covers twenty years in the lives of the characters. When I finished it, I felt like I'd lived those years and tears were running down my cheeks.

A Norwegian princess, Aasa, the only daughter of Harold, a wealthy king, is 17 when the story opens. While promised to another, she meets Olaf, the son of a ruthless Viking lord who would kill Aasa's father and brother and take her for his own. Olaf, sent to ask for Aasa's hand for his father, falls in love with Aasa when he first sees her--and she with him. It is one of those rare loves that seldom comes along, a true love that will not be denied. Aasa's brother, when he discovers they are lovers, separates them and sends Olaf and his ship back to the sea. Olaf experiences first a violent storm and then an attack of pirates that leaves him gravely wounded. He recovers slowly. Meanwhile, Aasa has been taken by Olaf's father in a brutal Viking raid where everyone she loves was killed and her home burned. Believing Olaf is dead, Aasa becomes the unwilling bride and queen of Olaf's father whom she loathes. She lives for revenge. She has a son, Halfdan (I assumed patterned after the real person, Halfdan the Black, the 9th century King of Vestfold and father of Harald I of Norway, the great unifier who lived from 850 to 933).

Crenshaw paints a vivid picture of Viking life and weaves an enthralling story that will keep you up late at night reading. I could hardly stand to put it down. Olaf is a wonderful hero, a strong Viking warrior with a softer side, who freely declares his love for Aasa. Aasa is at first a young maiden with few cares and a family that loves her. Then she becomes a woman with Olaf. Suddenly ripped away from all she loves, she becomes a strong and defiant queen of a man she hates, definitely a worthy heroine. The unrequited love experienced by Olaf and Aasa--for years--will tear your heart out. I thought these two would NEVER get together.

Crenshaw does not spare us the violence of the times, the hardships people at all levels endured nor the pagan rituals. But that is all a part of the rich tapestry she weaves so well. Written in 1995, this romance is as engaging as any you'll read written today. In fact, some of the earlier romances are the best and meant to be savored. This is one of them and should be reissued.

There's a glossary of terms in the back (I missed it until the end!).

I highly recommend this one for you Viking romance lovers! If you like this one, try her earlier Viking romance, EDIN'S EMBRACE. It's just as good. After reading these two, I reached out for more of Crenshaw's amazing romances and you can see my reviews of those on Amazon. I think Nadine Crenshaw was one of the early great romance authors and I, for one, intend to read all her novels. Here's her backlist:

Viking Gold- What a love story

The book Viking Gold by Nadine Crenshaw is my favorite book. It has everything needed to get 5 stars. It has romance, a little bit of action, a good plot, and GIRL POWER! The book shows how a woman can be so respected even if there isn't a powerful man behind her. Aasa (the main character) is a strong, intelligant woman who is able to gain respect from those who did not respect her at first. The love story in this book is amazing. Truly A Work Of Art

This was one of the best books I've ever read. The plot and the story line are amazing and the love story is trully touching. From the second I picked up this book I couldn't put it down and I found my self laying awake at night thinking about the characters and what will happen to them. The plot is truly a work of art, full of suspence and mystery, important hystorical facts as well as romance, girl power, love and life. This book has it all!!! It takes you to a time of pure magic but hardship and introduces you to genuine characters that you whish you could be or meet. One of the BEST. WOW. READ THIS BOOK!!!!

"It works, we're in business, yeah Babe!" So begins this remarkable selection from a forty-year correspondence between two artists who survived their time as wives in the Beat bohemia of the 1960s and went on to successful artistic careers of their own.
From their first meeting in 1960, writer Hettie Jones—then married to LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka)—and painter and sculptor Helene Dorn (1927–2004), wife of poet Ed Dorn, found in each other more than friendship. They were each other's confidant, emotional support, and unflagging partner through difficulties, defeats, and victories, from surviving divorce and struggling as single mothers, to finding artistic success in their own right.
Revealing the intimacy of lifelong friends, these letters tell two stories from the shared point of view of women who refused to go along with society’s expectations. Jones frames her and Helene's story, adding details and explanations while filling in gaps in the narrative. As she writes, "we'd fled the norm for women then, because to live it would have been a kind of death."
Apart from these two personal stories, there are, as well, reports from the battlegrounds of women's rights and tenant's rights, reflections on marriage and motherhood, and contemplation of the past to which these two had remained irrevocably connected. Prominent figures such as Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary appear as well, making Love, H an important addition to literature on the Beats.
Above all, this book is a record of the changing lives of women artists as the twentieth century became the twenty-first, and what it has meant for women considering such a life today. It's worth a try, Jones and Dorn show us, offering their lives as proof that it can be done.

About the Author
Hettie Jones is the author of numerous books, including her memoir of the Beat scene How I Became Hettie Jones; the poetry collection Drive; and the young adult Big Star Fallin’ Mama: Five Women in Black Music. She has published in many newspapers and magazines, including the Village Voice, Global City Review, and Ploughshares. She currently teaches in the Graduate Writing Program at The New School, the 92nd Street Y, and the Lower Eastside Girls Club, and she previously taught at several colleges and universities in New York and elsewhere. Jones lives in New York City.
