Nice Little Biography

This is very nice biography at the 3rd Grade reading level. (See reading info on site) The book features a timeline as well as black-and-white and color photos.

What I like about it is that there's a subtle emphasis on 'persistence'. The book begins and ends with a reminder of how persistent this amazing man was. He spent, after all, 27 years in prison. Eventually winning not only fairness for black South Africans, but also the presidency of his country.

Gr 1-3-Heinz explores the life in a pond from dawn to dusk. Turtles nip at mallard ducklings, hawks hunt woodchucks, and herons eat pumpkinseed fish. The cycle of life is evident. The informative, matter-of-fact narrative descriptions are almost scientific, as are the pictures, done in watercolor. The individual animals are illustrated with great attention to detail, and the close-ups of many of them are excellent. The pastel landscapes help soften the book, and are more impressionistic. Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. It's daybreak at Butternut Hollow Pond. It looks peaceful, but there is much going on. Bluegills dart out to feed on insects; a dragonfly snaps up mosquitoes, and then is snapped up himself by a tree swallow. At midmorning, five mallard ducklings narrowly escape the powerful jaws of a snapping turtle; a woodchuck also has luck on his side, when he scampers into his burrow just ahead of a marsh hawk. Sunset finds a largemouth bass on the end of a hook as a young boy reels him in from his canoe. Nighttime is the busiest of all; bats and nighthawks feast on bugs, crayfish search for night crawlers, and raccoons look for crayfish. Two concepts are beautifully demonstrated in this picture book for older readers: the hunter invariably becomes the hunted, and all living things are players in a complex cycle of interdependence that is much more than a simple food chain. Heinz fills this nature drama with action and sensory-loaded language that pulls children in as no science textbook can, and Marstall's realistic watercolor illustrations offer a lovely window to observe the diverse ecosystem. I loved the pictures in this book

I loved the pictures in this book! However, this is definitely not a book for a child younger than 6 years of age. Its about the life around the pond and the cycle of life, along with the food chain. Great book for teaching children about the food chain and my children were fascinated by the book. The pictures are done in water color, the text is very educational. Great for our homeschooling family!

Understanding the interdependence of animal life

When teaching science lessons on food webs or food chains, this would be an excellent addition to the lesson. The story of how each animal depends on other to survive is well told and beautifully illustrated. I especially liked the panorama view of the pond when you open the book's cover and back.

An Informational Science Picture Book.

Telling the cycle of life through pictures and words, Butter Nut Hollow Pond, informs readers about ecological study. It details the life of turtles, hawks, woodchucks, and pumpkinseed fish. Using humans to unveil the story in a peaceful setting, it is filled with drama throughout, enticing youngsters into the story.

The author has been an elementary school science teacher for twenty-three years (author page, unnumbered). He accurately gives information on his topic, engaging readers as he writes. The information is accurate and the wording is easy for young students to understand. For example:
As the bass circles back, kerploosh! Something hits the water above him and dangling legs seem to struggle and twitch. The bass strikes as another meal. But not this time. The object is hard. It pulls violently at the fish's jaw and is dragged forward. Moments later, a young boy hauls him in on rod and reel (pages, unnumbered).
Reading or listening to the words, young minds are given easy instruction on the circle of life as well as how the human aspect enters in.

In the twentieth century, labor migration followed by multinational corporations fundamentally altered the customary pairing of capital and nation to that of capital versus nation, challenging the concept of international borders as key factors in national development.

In tracing the economic development of the Great Lakes Basin as borderland and as transnational region, the authors of Permeable Border have provided a regional history that transcends national borders and makes vital connections between two national histories that are too often studied as wholly separate.

In the preface to this biography of the Texas Troubadour, author Pugh remarks that what first impressed him about the late Ernest Tubb was his "sheer staying power." Clearly it was perseverance that sustained Tubb through his five-decade career. During his initial climb to stardom, Tubb successfully dealt with the setbacks of poorly organized recording sessions and war (which limited the supply of shellac for the production of record albums), later managing to survive the introduction of rock and roll to the music scene. All the while, Tubb battled drinking, illness and broken relationships. The author does not dwell on Tubb's personal problems, however. Nor does he skimp on the events that led the East Texas native to become famous for such well-known hits as "Waltz Across Texas" and "Walking the Floor Over You." Amusing and illuminating anecdotes abound, including those about Tubb's admiration for Jimmie Rodgers and the early assistance provided Tubb by the legendary singer's widow, Carrie Rodgers, who asked in return simply that Tubb do the same for others. The "others" Tubb wound up assisting via his radio show "Midnite Jamboree," which still exists today, and his connections with the Grand Ole Opry, include Elvis Presley and Hank Williams. Though much has been written about the Texas Troubadour, this book provides ample insight into his entire career and an equally ample discography. Photos not seen by PW.

Tubb (1914-84) came from a humble background in Crisp, Texas, where his father was an overseer of a cotton farm. Growing up, Tubb was exposed to the music of Jimmie Rodgers. When Rodgers died, Tubb, a dedicated fan who had just started his own music career, felt he should carry on the Rodgers legacy. Even though he was heavily influenced by Rodgers, Tubb eventually became a legend himself, influencing the direction and growth of country music. Through Tubb's persuasion, the name "hillbilly" was dropped by the music industry in favor of "country music." Through Tubb's insistence a separate category of country music appeared on the charts in some of the trade magazines. Likewise, it was Tubb who paved the way for acceptance of country through his successful 1947 appearance at New York City's Carnegie Hall. Pugh, head of reference at the Country Music Foundation in Nashville, has produced an excellent biography of Tubb. By injecting a hard-edged realism about everyday life and problems into the lyrics of his songs, Tubb, more than most, made country music what it is today. Pugh has brought amazing dedication to limning the Texas Troubadour's life, and his extensive notes and comprehensive discography (indeed, sessionography, for each known player on each known recording is listed) make the resulting book the definitive resource on Tubb and his long career. As a research tool alone, the book is worth having, but Pugh also tells Tubb's life story in great detail without becoming cloying or overly reverent. Ernest Tubb (1914-84) was born dirt poor in Crisp Texas. During the Depression the lad toiled digging ditches; picking cotton; selling beer and singing for a matress company! Tubb toiled in rowdy Texas honkey-tonks and on small wattage radio stations. Ernest worked hard and finally got a spot on the Grand Ole Opry in 1943. Ernest Tubb sold millions of records. The tall Texan helped countless entertainers in their career development. He assisted among others: Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Hank Thompson, Skeeter Davis, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Cal Smith, Jack Greene and many others. He made over 4,000 on stage appearance, started and hosted the Ernest Tubb Record Shop Midnight Jamboree and recorded such classic country tunes as "Waltz Across Texas,"; "I'm Walking the Floor Over You,""Thanks a Lot." and countelss others. Tubb sold millions of records and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and was a wonderful ambassador of gaining country music respectability. Tubb's muscial idol was Jimmy Rodgers the singing breakman who died of TB in 1933. Tubb instituted the Jimmy Rodgers Festival in Meridian Mississippi; he was a friend of Mrs. Rodgers and was allowed to use Rodger's guitar on his gigs.
The Texas Troubadour fathered eight children having two wives Elaine and Oleane. Both of these marriages ended in divorce. He had trouble with alcoholic binges, heavy smoking and could exhibit a terrible temper. He was no saint. Yet Ernest Tubb was basically a kind man who helped others throughout his long career. He was one of the first entertainers to call his music "country" instead of "hillbilly. Tubb perfomed everywhere from Carneige Hall in New York to Nashville's Grand Ole Opry to a famous tour of Korea along with Hank Snow.
The author of this small print 323 page biography is Ronnie Pugh who is Head of Reference at the Country Music Foundation in Nashville. He has done a thorough job of researching Tubb's almost 50 year career through extensive interviews with musicians and family members who knew E.T. He also has provided the best discography available of all the thousands of Tubb songs on records. The book also contains rare phots of Ernest Tubb and his Texas Troubadours.
This book is a sine qua non for the general public and country music scholars wanting to examine the life of Ernest Tubb. He is the man who brought the honky-tonk sound and electric guitar music to the Grand Ole Opry. A legend and a kind man was Ernest Dale Tubb!

Kind of depressing, but informative

An exhaustively detailed biography, written by the head of the Country Music Foundation, which tracks ET from his early struggling years, onto his heyday as one of Decca's main cash cows, and through his decades of hard work and gradual decline. The writing is almost as dogged and linear as Tubb was during his years on the road -- not terribly elegant, literary or evocative, but the research is solid, including countless interviews with band members, industry movers, and Tubb relations. An authoritative resource for anyone who would like to find out how Tubb helped form the sound of hard country honkytonk in the early '40s, and how he later helped boost the careers of musicians such as Hank Snow, Hank Thompson and Loretta Lynn, and how Nashville eventually let him slide out of sight. Many of the details seems too depressing and tawdry to me, but it's still the story of a great man's life...

This Is The ultimate book on The Great Ernest Tubb

I have personally known the Tubb family and most of this I already knew so it was fun seeing what would be in the book and what would be left out and he left nothing out of the book. It gave you a very honet portait of this legendary man. It did not give a sugar coated picture. It was very informative and honest. Although I never got to meet the man just knowing what I know of him and his family. I'am sure that he would be proud of this book.

About the Author
Burkard WArdenweber obtained his PhD in computer science at Cambridge University, England. He headed Hella's Corporate R&D and founded the L-LAB. He is an honorary Professor at Paderborn University. Since 2004 he is in charge of Advanced Engineering at Visteon. He has published a number of books on Innovation Management.

JArg Wallaschek received his PhD from the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, Germany. He is Professor of Mechatronics and Dynamics at the University of Paderborn and founded the L-LAB where he acts as chairman for the university partners.

Peter Boyce received his PhD from the University of Reading, England. He has been active in the field of lighting research for many years, in both the UK and the USA. He is Professor Emeritus at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and author of Human Factors in Lighting.

Donald Hoffman obtained his PhD at MIT. He is Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of California, and author of Visual Intelligence: How We Create What We See. He received the Distinguished Scientific Award of the American Psychological Association, and the Troland Award of the National Academy of Sciences.

EASTERN STANDARD is a comedy that bites. It's Greenberg at his funniest and also his most touching and introspective, examining a group of yuppies at the end of the eighties evaluating their lives and trying to compensate for their guilty feelings by taking a homeless woman under their wing. Funny stuff, also subtly profound, and I mean that.

When this play opened at the end of the eighties, Frank Rich of the NY Times was one of the only critics to see its beauty. But thank gosh he noticed! The play is gorgeous. The characters are funny, real, INTERESTING. The ending is a bit too pat, but it does not stop the play from climbing to the top of my list of favorite plays.
