Basic Water Info

Very basic look at how people utilize water for such things as agriculture, fishing, transportation, hydroelectricity, and washing. Each page contains one large, colorful photograph and one simple, easy to read sentence. At the end, one page explains the difference between total water and drinking water. There is a nice chart, too.

There are a few water facts that might be useful in teaching water conservation. There is a photo glossary and index.

Cool pictures and full of information!

The book is about giant meat eaters - how they hunted, where they lived, how they died and also how the paleontologists studied their fossils.
The book is full of so much information and facts about the meat eaters. I learned the T Rex has sharp teeth like the size of bananas. One or two bites can crush many dinosaur bones. Big meat eaters can eat small plant and big necked dinosaurs. I also learned that predators sneak on plant eaters and how dinosaurs died when an asteroid crashed into the Earth and when they made the volcanoes erupt.
My favorite part of this book was the illustrations which shows how the dinosaurs looked and I loved the glossary page where I can find the meaning of the words from the book. It is very interesting when they tell how the paleontologists did their fossil studies.
This book will be attract other kids because it has lot of cool pictures which shows the size and time of the dinosaurs, where the dinosaurs lived.

Standard GED preparation materials are aften not enough to prepare a student to both pass a state GED examination and score well on college placements tests. Too frequently, the GED completing student scores in a range that places him in a series of remedial English and math courses for which he has to pay, but for which he will receive no course credit. Cliff's Clast Preparation Guide is a solution to this problem, markedly observed in populations targeted by welfare reform in the U.S. The text of Clast goes beyond the GED books to cement 9th-12th grade learning and build upon it step-by-step, with clear prose, problems, examples and graphics. All this challenges students and engages them in more consistent long-term study. The language arts and math skill building, along with problem-solving and critical thinking components give students what they need to succeed - the ability to figure things out rather than a dependency upon memorization. I recommend that all GED and H.S. educators pick up a copy of this Guide to help build a bridge for your students to cross to college. Don't let them fall in the river and drown.

This is a great book. It is an authentic source children's book teaching the harvesting of maple syrup and sugar. Porky White, who the book features, is an elder sho has passed away. This book captures his story of sugar making. No romantic Indian images here. Real people participating in the traditional way of life. I think this is a great book for kids and adults. Would be good in the classroom.

I really liked this book and when my son was studying native americans in his 2nd grade class, they used this book. It describes how the indians worked the sugar bush and how it was part of the balance of nature. Also,it explored how they created something that others wanted so that they could trade. This book has lots of colored pictures and has a glossary. It is a great intro to doing research. Nice book about contemporary Native Americans making syrup

As a homeschooling mother and maple syrup producer, I like to find quality children's books that talk about syrup. This one does that, and also tells the story of a Native American man who collects sap and makes syrup in modern times. It's a nice story of community and is respectful of this Native American tradition. My 6-year-old daughter enjoys telling other people the heartwarming legend of Ininatig in which the tree teaches the hungry Native Americans how to make syrup from it.

Don't Go See This Play On A First Date

This is not a horrible play, but it is a horrible play to see on a first date. I made that mistake. I saw it back in the 80s off broadway in New York. I scored great tickets, first row. The theater was small and the stage was not set in an arch or elevated.
One of the charactors/props in the play was a live orphaned baby lamb kept in a baby playpen at the front of the stage. The lamb kept licking our fingers during the play and was very cute. So far so good, this first date was going ok. I was scoring points with the girl I was with.
Then the drama started. The family portrayed is disfunctional and under incredible stress. The violence increases and increases. Yelling, fighting--I don't want to spoil things for you, but things don't turn out well for the lamb at the end (for you PETA folks out there--through the use creative F/Xs no living lamb was hurt in the production). End result for me--not a very good first date. It was a better read.

Disguised Gem

Sam Shepard has created a beautiful story of a poor family struggling to keep their home, relationships, and sanity. His amazing symbols keep the reader thinking, and this proves to be a play that is much more than surface deep. I especially enjoyed his themes on class and destiny, as well as his ideas on family and rebirth. For me, this book was amazingly written and intriquingly complex; its tragedies make the reader reevaluate his/ her own life. It made me laugh out loud, but in addition to being funny, it was enlightening, symbolic, provocative.

The blue collar Wild West, a la Sam

I had not read Shepard in many a moon, and it was good to check back into his strange version of America. This was written during his peak period (his recent stuff, most of which I have not read, is not as highly regarded), and like many of his other good ones, it concerns a squabbling family in the Southwest. The title and some of the dialogue indicates that Shepard viewed the travails of this clan as symptomatic of being part of the great white working class - and travails there are: alcoholism, violence, living with poverty breathing down their necks, smart alecky kids, a confused mother, a drunken, headstrong father. Parts of it are absurd and funny, but ultimately this is no comedy.

The play begins with the son Wesley, trying to repair the door his father, Weston, has smashed to bits in a drunken rage. The refrigerator is empty - there is a lot of action concerning the refrigerator and food. This is clearly a family in disarray. Both the parents are trying to sell the house out from under each other. The father is tough and dynamic, but seriously cracked, and much of the play concerns the other characters tiptoeing around and trying to figure out how to handle him. Most of the dialogue is standard American white trashese. There are a couple of monologs which, for me anyway, were not as effective. This was a good one. I would like to see it performed someday. It might be a little difficult though - the script calls for a live lamb.

Great! Too bad it is too expensive.

I will be watching to see when this book comes down from library prices. It is a great book, but definitely not worth $29. In contrast to the Shuter/Rees/Ganeri authors, this author does a great job at covering the basics about Rome in a slightly more kid-friendly format. With children in our home only a year apart, I have found that most of the ancient civilization books we've read don't quite fit for a K-2nd grader that well. Once you get to 2nd/3rd grade reading level, all those reference books are fine. But this was one even my kindergartner could sit though. The basic topics are covered: everyday life, religion, buildings, technology, ideas, and statesmen. But it is done a slightly slower pace. Instead of having big blocks of text with vocab words and captions, this book has full page illustrations and just one paragraph per page. Most of the illustrations are kind of cheesy looking, but tasteful and kind of masculine--my boys really enjoyed it. I wish there had been more actual photos included (there were only a couple), but that wasn't really the style of the book and there are lots of photos in DK and other books to reference.

For those who care about the issue, the book was G-rated with no inappropriate content or artifacts for kids. I also appreciated that Christianity was introduced into the Roman story in a factual and non-threatening way. Although I was very surprised to see that Constantine was deleted out of the story completely. I have noticed this trend in Roman reference works, and it puzzles me, to be honest. Seems like a huge event in Western Civ history is being neglected.

Anyway, the book deserves kudos for at least informing kids of some of the big ideas like paganism, Christianity, and the Roman Republic. It does none of these things in a very in-depth way, but like I said, I believe it is difficult to find works that acquaint the younger grades with ancient civilizations without being overwhelming. This one does a great job.

I got this book from the library for my 3-yr-olds who like to look at pictures and hear the explanations, even if they don't read the words. It has great pictures, good info, and would be a terrific book if it didn't include a picture spread on how the Romans fed the Christians to the lions with a really freaking sad and disturbing image of mothers, babies and small children being tearfully ushered into the coliseum to face a grisly public death. I don't want to think about that myself, much less explain to my kids how the Romans would have sent mothers and children in to be gruesomely murdered in public. Cover the persecution of Christians without illustrating the imminent deaths of toddlers. Talk about gladiators and show adults fighting. I get that history is history, but god. There's also a line about how the fathers were in control of their families and could even decide to kill a family member if they wanted to. True? Sure. Relevant or appropriate for a kids' history book? Nah. Bottom line - if you or your kids are the kind who are sensitive to disturbing or very, very sad things...pick another book.
