In an effort to continue the traditions of the Hochunk (Winnebago) people, Hunter follows 12-year-old Russell through the year as he learns about his people's special relationship with corn. Russell is a hard-working student in St. Paul, Minnesota, fond of computers, hockey, and football. The cover photograph shows a thoroughly modern boy hoeing in a corn field, dressed in shorts, T-shirt, black tennies, and backward hat?illustrating the balance between the contemporary and traditional that Russell is learning to live, under the careful guidance of his elders. The boy and his family raise their corn on a friend's farm some distance south, where they all participate in the cycle of growing and experience the bounty of the earth. The author uses Indian terms and words throughout the text and explains each briefly without interrupting the flow of the prose: "The next time Russell visits the farm, it is July, called Wa-xoch-wee-dda, or the corn tasseling moon." The book contains legends and history, as well as detailed information about tending, harvesting, and drying the corn. Nearly every page has a large full-color photograph or two that complement the text and make this book particularly inviting. Hunter interweaves highlights of the daily life of 12-year-old Russell to give readers a glimpse of a well-rounded American middle-schooler of mixed heritage who participates in some of the traditional activities of his grandfather's Winnebago people even as he's living in a large city, playing hockey, and working out computer problems. The importance of corn and its harvest and the strength of family life to the Winnebago people is emphasized through text and well demonstrated through color photos. One contradiction may stop some readers: the text implies that Russell is wearing a short-sleeved shirt when he works in the corn field but the photo shows him in a long-sleeved one. A map and an author's note about her own Native American traditions are included, as are a glossary and a brief list of further readings. Karen Morgan

A congenial mix of reportage--marred by disorganization--on the cultivation of corn and its importance in American Indian traditions. After a somewhat disjointed, irrelevant preface, Hunter portrays a family that upholds the traditions of the Winnebago Indians throughout the harvest and preparation of flint corn- -multicolored ``Indian corn.'' A thoroughly modern 12-year-old, Russell, straddles two worlds, and benefits from both; in fact, all the children's lives are intriguingly integrated between city living in St. Paul, Minnesota, and their activities in the country, from their farm labors to the tribal activities such as the ceremonial dance celebrating the harvest. The text does not progress smoothly from topic to topic and is sometimes repetitious; Hunter writes about Russell in the third-person, and, by referring to herself in the full-color photographs as ``Russell's grandmother,'' unnecessarily distances herself from the narrative. However, the abundant photographs assist greatly in providing a window onto the subjects' lives, well-chosen and framed to capture and glorify the subject. About the Author
Victor M. Uribe-Uran has taught Latin American history at Florida International University since 1993. He holds a law degree, a master's in political science, and a Ph.D. in history. His research and publications pertaining to the social history of lawyers and the law have appeared in the Journal of Latin American Studies, The Americas, and the Latin American Research Review, among others. Uribe-Uran has been a Fulbright scholar, has received two Andrew Mellon fellowships, and has been awarded a TIP Prize--a special honor recognizing Florida International's best teachers. Also, one of his articles was recently awarded the Antonine Tibezar Prize.

A new masterpiece

I saw this play in St. Louis and was astounded by it. After the first act, you realize you're watching a well-wrought play, populated by strong, quirky characters, interesting situations, and fascinating, complex relationships, all the things you expect from Wilson. But it doesn't seem like the best play he's ever written, as quite a few people have claimed. With works like Fifth of July, Burn This, and Redwood Curtain in his canon, Best Ever is quite a claim. Then you see Act II. And you realize they might just be right. All the groundwork laid in Act I pays off in such abundantly satisfying ways. And there's so much more to this play than you thought. There is the temptation to fault Book of Days for its loose construction and seemingly scattershot laying out of scenes, but that's where its real beauty lies, in the poetry of the ordinary, in the unexpected turns life takes, in the randomness of living. The organization of the play is in its characters and in its themes of ambition, the need to know, and the fear of change. With plainly theatrical devices sprinkled throughout the show - characters narrating the show, watching from the sides, stepping out of scenes to directly address the audience - this is not trying to be kitchen sink drama. It is a play uniquely American and just as uniquely Lanford Wilson. It is what it says it is, a book of days, a diary, a story to be told, with characters at once good and bad, admirable and not. It's a snapshot of small town American life at the end of the millennium, in some ways not so different from big city life, in some ways light years away.

Vintage Material

Landford Wilson's Book of Days is a real play. Nothing fake about it. First off, his characters are so in deep and contrast with eachother that it makes it a great read. Most of the first act is basically a charming exposition until it nose-dives into a dark and twisted conflict (sorry, read the play). There is a lot of language, however, but it makes a profound impact in what is being told in the story. The way Wilson has each character being a member of the chorus pulls you into the play. The ending is the best: it has you thinking that this could be happening in your own back yard. It can also be debated that this is in fact a tragedy instead of drama. Read this play!
This was a very hard play to put down. In matter of fact, I didn't.
