Disappointed too!

This was definately sparse on the recipes. It is very basic (and I was a bit surprised to see that in the publication info at the front of the book, it's also listed under "juvenile literature"). There is good info on Vietnam, it's customs, people, etc., but a full half of the book concentrated on that and a few silly things like describing the term "boil". Definately not enough recipes. A grand total of 24 recipes, including how to cook rice and recipes for simple sauces. I'm disappointed with this (and the book "Cooking the Thai Way" which I ordered with it) but hate to return things so I'll just have to make the dozen or so recipes that interest me. Then get a nice, comprehensive Vietnamese cookbook where I can preview it before buying! This was my first online book purchase...

Disappointment!

Just right after receiving the book, I took a look and was very disappointed immediately: "Is this all ?"The book is thin and carry almost of half for unnessary general introduction. There are not much especial and interesting recipes which you can find from the other practical and attentive book .
Perhaps because of the price so is that all we can get for what we pay?
For really really really beginner that may work.

just recipes please!

This book is very disappointing! Very few recipes and a lot of pages wasted on things such as warning the reader to be careful while cooking. Is it really necessary to include a recipe on how to make steamed rice? This book also claimed to include vegetarian recipes, but very few were provided. Some of recipes look promissing, but really not worth buying because there are too few recipes and too many page fillers.

I actually bought this book in a used bookstore, in Chicago thirty years ago. I had a one day layover at O'hare so ventured out for some shopping. I bought the book for my wife. She had been suffering from RA since sixteen and was about to go to a wheelchair.
When I returned home we had a spirited discussion and decided to try the plan. It was rough because she doesn't like seafood but we gave it a try and it worked. She is now in her late 60's and has been able to live a productive life, including raising two great kids and a grandson.

One day I found an early edition of this book and began the diet it describes. Within three weeks I was able to discontinue medication. As long as I stick to the diet I am still pain free. There is no sign of arthritis in my body. At age 52 I am more active and youthful than many women my age. I recommend that every arthritic read this book and try the diet. I have been following the advice in this book for the past three weeks for a sore knee. I no longer take ibiprophen to control the pain { it didn't help much anyway } I also massage my knee with peanut oil which is an old Edgar Casey remedy for non-compliant clients. One or the other or both works.

The recipes are easy to follow. You get quite enough to eat with only fish and vegetables. And you lose weight. All my skirts pass the zipper test now { French Women Don't Get Fat }

I'mll thoroughly delighted with the book. I have looked for it for years and now it is mine.

Can the results of experiments in science be trusted? Recent studies have asked just this question, placing under attack the validity and legitimacy of one of the fundamental sources for scientific knowledge.

Selectivity and Discord addresses these concerns by examining two problems in the use of experimental evidence in science: selectivity, or bias in the production of data or in analysis, and the resolution of discordant results. Allan Franklin, physicist and philosopher of science, offers solutions toward resolving these problems and presents detailed case studies from the history of modern physics to further illustrate how such disagreements can be settled.

When producing results, the choice of how data is measured or studied comes under scrutiny and, in many instances, dispute. Franklin addresses several examples, including R. A. Millikan's findings in the measurement of e (the charge on the electron), which were initially disputed and then proven correct. He explains how, despite Millikan's use of selectivity in both data and analysis procedures, numerous and independent measurements verified the validity of e. Though bias occurred, the results were shown to be accurate.

Franklin analyzes other case studies-the early search for gravity waves, the claimed existence of a heavy, 17-keV neutrino, and the assertion of low-mass electron-positron states-in which the questioning of evidence was well founded. Each of these examples involved not only accusations of selectivity, but also discordant findings. Franklin explains the ways in which the nature of these results were revealed and discusses how-through the course of scientific practice-the conflicts were eventually decided.

Some instances of contradictory results, however, are not so easily defined. Franklin examines the case of William Wilson and the absorption of Beta rays. In the early twentieth century, there was a widely held belief that electrons were absorbed exponentially. Wilson argued against this view, and after a lengthy investigation, the physics community accepted his view. The earlier measurements were not incorrect, the scientists had misinterpreted the data. In the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment, different analyses of the same data resulted in conflicting conclusions-both of which were published in adjoining papers by different members of the same experimental group. Franklin demonstrates how even these puzzling situations were worked through during the process of further scientific investigation.

While addressing the recent questions on the validity of experimentation, Franklin concedes that discrepancies are unavoidable. However, he determines that the problems of selectivity and discord can be-and are-solved over the course of time in the normal practice of science. A lengthy and complex string of methodological and epistemological checks and balances are used to scrutinize the experimentation process. Independent sources are routinely and stringently drawn upon to examine the work of fellow scientists. More often than not, the results are proven correct, and when instances of bias do arise, resolution occurs in an objective and legitimate manner.

Most of us don't really want to get a close up look at a hornet for fear we'll get stung, but in this book you can even get a magnifying glass out and even take a look at the wispy hair-like covering on its back if you feel like it. The hornet is an arthropod. Its body is "divided into segments, jointed legs, and a stiff exoskeleton." What surprises and sometimes annoys people the most are the amazing nests they build. There is some confusion as to the differences between a wasp and a hornet, but the photographs and descriptions in this book make the differentiation very clear. The "only true hornet in the United States is the European hornet." It is not known exactly how it got here, but emerged in New York State in 1840.

In this book you'll learn about the metamorphosis of the hornet, the nest they make, how they choose a nest site, how long these nests are used, what the nest is built of, how they build it, how the cells are made, how the queen lays the eggs and tends to them, how she feeds her babies, her prey, how the larvae grow and emerge from their cells, how the adult workers add to the nest, why they enlarge the nest, how the ingenious design of the nest and the workers keep the temperature steady, how they defend the nest and when they begin new colonies. Their lives are very interesting and the reader will be enthralled with the life of the hornet!

This is a very interesting book that even the most reluctant reader will be able to make it to the end. Needless to say, the bug lover or budding entomologist will be fascinated. There are numerous full color, close up photographs, one two-page photograph listing its outside body parts, a two-page cut away illustration listing the inside body parts and scattered hornet facts.
