Landau covers fire, wind and water, coal and steam, oil and gasoline, electricity, and nuclear energy and explains how developments in these areas powered the Industrial Revolution, changed transportation, and improved the lives of people. The advantages and disadvantages of renewable and nonrenewable energy sources are discussed. Steve Parker's Fuels for the Future (Raintree, 1998) covers much of the same material but lacks the historical connections. Communication describes how the printing press, telephone, radio, television, and the Internet changed how information is conveyed and how people relate to one another. Ian Graham's Communications (Raintree, 2001) contains much of the same information. Medicine gives readers an appreciation for all of the advances that have improved and extended life. Steve Parker's Medicine (DK, 2000) covers similar historical material. Each book includes an epilogue that suggests future advances in its area and a time line that runs along the bottom of the pages. Wightman’s research on these early “undocumentals” in the Cuzco region of Peru reveals much of importance on Andean society and its adaptation and resistance to Spanish cultural and political hegemony. The book thereby informs our understanding of social change in the colonial period.
Wightman shows that the dismissal of the forasteros as marginalized rural poor is superficial at best, and through laborious and painstaking archival research she presents a clear picture of the transformation of traditional society as the native populations coped with the disruptions of the conquest—and in doing so, reveals the reciprocal adaptations of the colonial power. Her choice of Cuzco is particularly appropriate, as this was a “heartland” region crucial to both the Incan and Spanish empires. The questions addressed by Wightman are of great concern to current Andean ethnohistory, one of the liveliest areas of such research, and are sure to have an important impact.

What makes these books particularly appealing is the fact that there are so few sources available on these cultures for this audience. Suitable for reports, but likely to engage children pursuing personal interests as well, they would make useful additions to most collections.

A good basic introduction to the life of the Sami people,this is appropriate for any age group, and would be a good educational tool to be included when children are being taught about native (indigineous)cultures.This was one of the earliest native cultures, and has many implications for us even at the present time.Since recently learning that I have unexpected genetic roots in this culture I have been actively educating myself about my "roots".

The best dinosaur book ever written.

I've been reading dinosaur books ever since I was a little boy in the 1970s. I remember being fascinated at these creatures that the then "conventional wisdom" said were bulky, obese, overweight, dumb, slow witted, slow moving, cold blooded swamp dwellers. Ha! Our knowledge of dinosaurs sure has come far since then. In this book, Bakker presents a tremendous amount of evidence to challenge many of the popular ideas about dinosaurs. Bakker uses evidence in the fossil record to argue that dinosaurs were warm blooded, active creatures who lived in groups, and migrated, and raised their young, and were capable of running at rather rapid speeds, and who did not live in swamps. Actually, many of these ideas had been proposed during the 19th century, only to be swept under the rug. Bakker revives many of these ideas, as well as coming up with many original ideas of his own. This is an excellent book.

Vlad, or Prince Dracula, earned his reputation by impaling his subjects and enemies on a regular basis. Streissguth moves from the Balkans to discuss Bram Stoker's Dracula, the play; Dracula, the movie; actor Bela Lugosi; and reviews a few later Dracula movies. Listeners looking for some good old fashioned blood-letting may be disappointed by the many details such as political infighting in the 1400's, the state of Hollywood in the 1930's, and the woes of Bela Lugosi in his later years. Narrator Scott Brick takes us through over 500 years of Dracula with a uninteresting, studious voice. His dry synopsis of Stoker's book will leave listeners craving a good scare. This audiobook will be disappointing for Dracula fans, and too long-winded for the marginally interested.

Biography should read NOt about the real Romanain prince

This is not a book about the real Romanian prince Vlad Dracula, it has some historicla facts, but it is mainly a book intertwining the real prince with the mythical one created by Bram Stoker.if anyone has studeid Bram Stoker's book, they would see the notes at the Rosenbach museum in Philidelphia, Bram had next to nothing in information about the real Romanian prince Vlad Dracula.During the time Bram wrote 'Dracula' he only had available one or two books on the Romanian Prince. This book stated that most of Vlad Dracula's crimes were over exaggerated, then on the next page prior, they say that Dracula showed no pity for his horrendous crimes. First they say most were exaggerated, and then they use them as historical evidence, then, they state something about his character, when the man died over 500 years ago and they use only their opinion, and not FACTS about him. There are some errors in this outdated version, such as the large circles of impaled victims. This was not at Timpa hill in Brasov, but in Targoviste, outside Vlad's capital. The population of Brasov was @13,000 in the 14th century and also in the Brasov archives, it states Vlad only impaled 40 cheating merchants. Whoever else got in his way to stop him obviously got hurt. This is why the figure of 30,000 impaled outside of Brasov is a very EXAGGERATED figure. This book is a good read, but only if you know the difference between the two Dracula's:Mythical and Real.
