Contributors also explore the growing emphasis on self-improvement and modernization through studies of architecture, changing beauty standards, and the impact of in vitro fertilization. Biopolitical logics and the self-regulation of moral personhood are also addressed in essays on HIV/AIDS and transnational adoption. The issue highlights the ways in which the socialist past is integral to the present in Vietnam, even as it is remade and newly configured.

Trinh T. Minh-ha is a filmmaker, multimedia artist, writer, composer, and postcolonial feminist theorist. Her award-winning films—including Night Passage, The Fourth Dimension, A Tale of Love, Shoot for the Contents, Surname Viet Given Name Nam, Naked Spaces – Living Is Round, and Reassemblage—have been shown at film festivals and in museums around the world. She is the author of numerous books, including Elsewhere, Within Here; Cinema Interval; Framer Framed; When the Moon Waxes Red; and Woman, Native, Other. She is Professor of Gender & Women's Studies, and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley.

Between 1946 and 1966a surge of violence in Colombia left 200,000 dead in one of the worst conflicts the western hemisphere has ever experienced. the first seven years of this little-studied period of terror, known as la Violencia, is the subject of Blood and Fire. Scholars have traditionally assumed that partisan politics drove La Violencia, but Mary Roldán challenges earlier assessments by providing a nuanced account of the political and cultural motives behind the fratricide. Although the author acknowledges that partisan animosities played an important role in the disintegration of peaceful discourse into violence, she argues that conventional political conflicts were intensified by other concerns.
Through an analysis of the evolution of violence in Antioquia, which at the time was the wealthiest and most economically diverse region of Colombia, Roldán demonstrates how tensions between regional politicians and the weak central state, diverse forms of social prejudice, and processes of economic development combined to make violence a preferred mode of political action. Privatization of state violence into paramilitary units and the emergence of armed resistance movements exacted a horrible cost on Colombian civic life, and these processes continue to plague the country.
Roldan’s reading of the historical events suggests that Antioquia’s experience of la Violencia was the culmination of a brand of internal colonialism in which regional identity formation based on assumptions of cultural superiority was used to justify violence against racial or ethnic "others" and as a pretext to seize land and natural resources. Blood and Fire demonstrates that, far from being a peculiarity of the Colombians, la Violencia was a logical product of capitalist development and state formation in the modern world.
This is the first study to analyze intersections of ethnicity, geography, and class to explore the genesis of Colombian violence, and it has implications for the study of repression in many other nations.

A complicated analysis of a complicated problem

Mary Roldan tackles a complex issue in Blood and Fire. In 1946, Colombia entered a period of violent conflict known simply as La Violencia. The traces of that early eruption can still be seen today, as much of Colombia is still uncontrolled by the government, and subject to rule by guerrilla revolutionaries and reactionary paramilitaries. Today, the problem is ignored by the U.S. government and mainstream media, who choose to assume that all violence there is drug-related, instead of examining facts. To understand the continuing violence in the Colombian countryside, one must understand the origins of that violence.

There's no easy answer for those seeking the reasons that Colombia could have endured such strife for so long, and Roldan doesn't offer one. She narrows her analysis to examine a single department (province) in Colombia, and offers many overlapping suggestions for why the formerly peaceful partisan politics could have turned so bloody there. Roldan is clearly an intelligent scholar who devoted a great deal of energy to her research, and as a Colombian, is passionate about this topic. Roldan's refusal to offer a concrete answer marks her, in some ways, as an honest researcher, but in providing so many different possibilities, the narrative of the book is often confused. It is clear that Roldan did an immense amount of very thorough research, but she is unable to draw a very clear picture of the events of La Violencia. This is, in part, due to the complexity of the problem, but there are structural issues in the writing as well; it is a difficult book to read.

La Violencia is a difficult issue, for historians or modern political scientists, and as such, it often gets ignored. Roldan's book is a seminal analysis, and definitely offers a great deal of information to some one learning about Colombian history for the first time. But be prepared for a difficult read. In many ways, the ongoing struggle in Colombia is like the conflict in the Middle East; learning the history may provide you with a new understanding of the events, but motives are much harder to discern.

Brilliant

Mary Roldán has authored a masterpiece. She destroys many simplistic viewpoints often used in Washington to justify U.S. aid. The author uses a powerful prism to examine the violence in Colombia. She concludes that paramilitary death squads are one of the greatest threats to democracy in Colombia. Roldán's research is impressive. She deserves loud applause.

Grade 4-8-- Glen Jackson, Jr., is an 11-year-old Ojibway Indian from the Leech Lake reservation in Minnesota. His people are wild rice growers, and the annual harvest has as much spiritual meaning for his people as the raising of corn, beans, and squash does for the Hopi and the Seneca. Glen is taking part in the ritual for the first time and is worried that he won't be strong enough to push the canoe through the rice beds without tipping over. As in Woods's A Boy Becomes a Man at Wounded Knee (Walker, 1992) and Keegan's Pueblo Boy (Dutton, 1991), readers are introduced to the modern Indian world through the experiences of an individual young person. Ojibway history and descriptions of the reservation are smoothly blended into the narrative as Glen learns how to harvest, parch, winnow, and cook the rice. There is a lot of information here, and readers will gain much from it and the many well-chosen, full-color photographs of the Jackson family. A word list and excellent bibliography conclude the book, and author Michael Dorris contributes an excellent foreword that captures the real strength of this and similar books --Lisa A. I thought the book was really bad. they should of done a better job on showing how it was to live where they lived. although the cover of the book kinda looked interesting. one thing that was ok about the book was how they had to survive.

Joan Vail Thorne's *Exact Center of the Universe* hits on the funnybone and tugs at the heartstrings. The story is of the South and of Vada Love Powell and her son, Apple. Apple springs the news to Vada that he has secretly gotten married to Mary Ann Mele, "an Irish Italian Catholic girl whose mother drives a schoolbus," news Vada is none too pleased to hear. Set in the 1950's and 1960's, the plot centers around Vada and her friends Marybell Baxter and Enid Symonds, refined ladies of times past, as they come to terms with the changing world around them. The story plays well, and audiences love the humor of the aging "tree-house gang" as they deal with Apple's marriage, his sister-in-law Mary Lou's anthropological photographs of naked New Guinean tribes, and trouble in their beloved Episcopalian Women's Guild. As an actor currently playing Apple Powell onstage, I can strongly recommend this production for its humor, its wit, and its sentimentality.
