The male character in this book has dialog that resembles the way a woman would think and feel, so he lost his edge, although the story is interesting.

An exciting Viking romance.

Gwyneth was just a girl when she rescued Selig, the young Viking her father was holding as a slave. Now she is a young woman, about to be married off to a man she despises. But before her wedding can take place, Viking raiders attack. Their leader takes Gwyneth captive. He is none other than Selig, the young man Gwyneth freed years ago. Selig is determined to keep his identity secret from Gwyneth, but he also wants to make her fall in love with him. Gwyneth finds herself with feelings for this Viking who has the same name as the boy she rescued out of love. But they have such opposing views of the world, how can they ever be together? I loved this book. It was full of action, suspense, and of course, a good love story. I'll definitely be reading other books by Kathryn Hockett.

One draw back. I felt that the further into the book I got the more that "Christianity" was being forced on the main male character and the reader. Had I have know that the religious stance of the female character was such a huge portion of the book I never would have purchased it. The book did have a lot of adventure and g-rated romance.

Amid these conditions, Royster views the acquisition of literacy as a dynamic moment for African American women in how they used written language not only to satisfy their general needs for agency and authority but also to fulfill sociopolitical purposes as well.Traces of a Stream is a showcase for nineteenth century African American women, and particularly elite women, as a group of writers who are currently underrepresented in rhetorical scholarship. Struggling under the double burden of racial and sexual inequality, 19th-century African American women sought for ways to gain empowerment. In this engaging new work, Royster (English, Ohio State) shows how eloquent, well-educated black women used essay writing as an act of resistance against white oppression. The periodical press became an ally of these courageous women, publishing early civil rights and anti-lynching essays by Maria W. Stewart, Ida B. Wells, and other writers of sociopolitical import. According to Royster, literacy and knowledge were crucial for the success of the community, and she documents the history of African American schooling from antebellum times, when some slaves were taught to read despite legal sanctions, to the later rise of historically black colleges. She also profiles a number of prominent black women educators and discusses the Black Clubwomen's Movement, which provided a unique forum for public discourse. About the Author
Jacqueline Jones Royster, associate professor of English at the Ohio State University, has three complementary areas of interest: the rhetorical history of women of African descent, the development of literacy, and delivery systems for the teaching of writing. Royster was a member of the editorial collective of SAGE: A Scholarly Journal of Black Women (1983-1996), with whom she co-edited Double-Stitch: Black Women Write About Mothers and Daughters; she also edited Southern Horrors and Other Writings: The Anti-Lynching Campaign of Ida B. Wells, 1892-1900, and served as the consulting author for composition of Writer's Choice, Grades 6-8.

Awesome Play

The script writing is brilliant. It delves into the mind of a man who is confused about himself and what his abilities are as an actor. It has, humor, drama, and excellent pacing. I actually cared about the characters and each action that a character committed led to more story.

Read the play. You wont be disappointed.

Interesting to read if you've seen Stage Beauty, which is actually better - not always the case with plays to film. But the writing is very good. Great scenes for a high level adult acting class.

Awesome Love Story!

This was the first book i ever read by Ashland Price, and i must say it is still one of my favorites. I have reread this books so many times i'm afraid that it shall one day soon fall to piece in my hands. This books is filled excitement. Alanna is taken away from her homeland and thrust into the waiting arms of Storr, a strong Viking raider. Both are fierce and passionate characters. I enjoyed this so much, that evertime i read it i cannot set it down.

First of all, I am not a fan of ronamce novels. I found this book ata garage sale. But, its not like any other romace-type novel Ive ever read. Its mostly go a very interesting story-line which leads up to the romance. I have to rate this book very good, its something to enjoy again and again. ^-^

Good Viking Romance with Issues and a Disappointing Ending

Set in 815 A.D. on the coast of Ireland (Erin), this Viking romance tells the story of an Irish girl, Alanna, who is captured by a Viking, Storr, a chieftain who is scouting out the settlements to attack. For twenty years the Vikings had been raiding the coasts of Erin, and Alanna knew she needed to escape to warn her people. She escapes only to be recaptured when Storr raids her family's ring fort.

Alanna eventually is seen as a courageous, unselfish girl, though she is terribly naïve and even stupid about some things and that was most annoying in the beginning. For example, she was ignorant as to a comb's purpose even after it was demonstrated for her. Though she had planned her escape from Storr, she had given no thought in which direction she should ride to get home. All this from a girl who plays chess! I found that bizarre. When she explains her Christian faith to the Viking, she gets it a bit wrong, too. No wonder Storr was confused. Perhaps the author intended that impression of ignorance, as if the Irish Catholics understood little of the faith they believed in. Alanna didn't explain the incarnation very well, for example. Still, it was interesting seeing the Viking struggle with concepts foreign to his own faith.

You have to get nearly three fourths of the way through the book before you see any real chemistry between Alanna and Storr. Since Storr lost the bride he loved, he really wasn't interested in other woman and had taken a vow of chastity (this from a Viking?). He and Alanna become friends and that allows her to avoid the rape her cousins experience (we are spared the details). But the romance is very slow in developing.

Price tells a good tale and kept me turning pages as she drew me into the Viking and Irish culture of the 9th century. Aside from the issues discussed already, the main reason I could not give this story 5 stars is the ending. It is abrupt and left issues unresolved: two villains not dealt with; the fate of her cousin who escaped and was recaptured; etc. She uses an epilogue to throw some closure at us but it was very disappointing. Notwithstanding the 474 pages, I felt like she stopped writing before it was finished.
