My son's favorite book....

My son is 3 1/2 and loves Helicopters, he got this book for Christmas. He loves it (he even takes it to bed to read to his stuffed animals). It's a small (in size) paperback book with realistic images of parts of the helicopter and different types of helicopters, including thier "duties." The book explains everything in general terms that any child can understand. I love it because it's very educational. So, if you have a child who loves helicopters, this is the book for them.

Capital Punishment from a different perspective

The play kept me reading, wanting to know the plight of its characters and their motivations for the crimes that put them on death row...however, the play left me with more questions than answers and truly questioning my acceptance of capital punishment. The play made me want to research early childhood enviornments and their impact on convicted felons. A wonderful interaction of characters who face the ultimate punishment for their terrible crimes.

Colombia’s western Coffee Region is renowned for the whiteness of its inhabitants, who are often described as respectable pioneer families who domesticated a wild frontier and planted coffee on the forested slopes of the Andes. Some local inhabitants, however, tell a different tale—of white migrants rapaciously usurping the lands of indigenous and black communities. Muddied Waters examines both of these legends, showing how local communities, settlers, speculators, and politicians struggled over jurisdictional boundaries and the privatization of communal lands in the creation of the Coffee Region. Viewing the emergence of this region from the perspective of Riosucio, a multiracial town within it, Nancy P. Appelbaum reveals the contingent and contested nature of Colombia’s racialized regional identities.

Nineteenth- and twentieth-century Colombian elite intellectuals, Appelbaum contends, mapped race onto their mountainous topography by defining regions in racial terms. They privileged certain places and inhabitants as white and modern and denigrated others as racially inferior and backward. Inhabitants of Riosucio, however, elaborated local narratives about their mestizo and indigenous identities that contested the white mystique of the Coffee Region. Ongoing violent conflicts over land and politics, Appelbaum finds, continue to shape local debates over history and identity. Drawing on archival and published sources complemented by oral history, Muddied Waters vividly illustrates the relationship of mythmaking and racial inequality to regionalism and frontier colonization in postcolonial Latin America.

Amazing Comedy, Well Written and Light

This is truly a wonderfully written and hilarious comedy. It's a very short play, performing at around an hour and fifteen minutes, but every moment is packed with laughs, action, romance, suspense or pandemonium.
Briefly, the play is about an epic movie being filmed in the desert of Arizonia in the 1930's. Two brothers, Benny and Phil become extras on the set and both fall in love with Louise, the Assistant Director of Atmosphere Personel. Everything that can go wrong pretty much does. Toss in a lot of scene-stealing secondary characters like a prima-donna Queen of the Nile, a psychotic special effects man and a Coco Chanel-type costume designer and there's nothing but great stuff going on every second.
The writing is excellent and flows very well. There are lots of great one liners and many terrific repeating gags that just get funnier and funnier. Brilliantly, the writer never pushes these more than the magical number of three times. If I had to compare it to something everyone might know, it's similar to what you would get out of Mel Brooks, only cleaner. There is a little cursing but it's easily left out if desired.
This is a light, fluffy comedy. There are no morals or meanings. It's just a sit back and enjoy the chaos kind of event. And for those of you who like happy endings, it does have one. Louise is delightfully matched with one of the brothers and things work out well for everyone. (With the exception of the other Assistant Director. However, as he is the mean character in the show, I don't think anyone cared very much.)
From experience, I know that our audiences loved it. I have also heard that some schools have done it for competition one-acts with great success. In order to keep the momentum, we chose to perform without an intermission, which I also feel worked well.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a light comedy.

This is a story about a lot of things!

When I'd heard reviews of this play during its Broadway run, most reviewers either loved or hated it. It's not as bad as has been said, and actually reaches into hysterical in many points. It tells the story of 2 brothers who come to be extras on a Biblical epic [filmed] in the 30's in the Arizona desert, and end up both falling in love with the Assistant Director in charge of the extras, and become the director and star of the movie, "Exeunt Omnes". The 3 principals are supported by an ensemble of 3 actors who play everyone from an Egyptian Dancing Girl to Executioners to Hollywood costume designers. I would have to rate this script high for performability and for the humor in it. The characters are written strongly, and have very distinct personalities, and the story is entertaining, with some interesting absurdist touches, and I would recommend this to anyone who likes a sly comedy that can be outrageous at the same time.

Gr 4-6--This photo essay by an Assiniboine radio personality is a wonderful companion to George Ancona's Powwow (Harcourt, 1993). Like that title, Drumbeat takes readers on a visit to a powwow but, like Sandra King's Shannon (Lerner, 1993), does so from an insider's perspective. Braine packs a lot of information into this slim volume, including a preface in which she gives an excellent personal talk on why she loves powwows and what they mean to many Indian people today. She goes on to explain how they started, when and where they are held, and what one can expect to see there. Detailed descriptions of the various dance styles for both men and women are given, followed by information on the singing and drumming, a special plus. Other books on the subject talk a lot about dancing, but often little about the all-important drums. In addition, readers learn about round dances, contest dancing, special dances, honor songs, and giveaways. All of the information flows logically, but there are no section headings and no index. Informative full-color photographs are well placed throughout, but can't touch the brilliance of those in Ancona's book.

Grade 7-10–A well-researched, well-organized biography. The fearless feminist was born in Ohio in 1838 into a troubled family. What money they had was sometimes obtained through nefarious means. Woodhull often worked as a medium and healer; one of her customers was Cornelius Vanderbilt, who gave her and her sister the funds to open their own Wall Street brokerage business. At about the same time, Woodhull became active in the suffrage movement, and she ran for U.S. president in 1872. Her fascinating and full life is expertly detailed in this narrative. What could have been confusing and dense, especially the descriptions of the many scandals surrounding her, is instead clearly explained and logically presented. The book is full of crisp black-and-white illustrations and photos that capture the times. There are few resources for youth about Victoria Woodhull, a fascinating, controversial figure who began advocating for women's rights in the nineteenth century and then became the first woman to run for president of the U.S. Havelin's prose, while sometimes bland and straightforward, is serviceable and never sensationalizing, and Woodhull is such an inherently interesting figure that the very facts of her life will spark interest in readers. The numerous quotes from primary sources, including Woodhull's own words, and archival images enhance the text, as do Havelin's attempts to put Woodhull's complicated story into cultural context. A Great Introduction to Aircraft Carriers

For a child with an interest in aviation, this book is a simple introduction to Naval Aviation and the basic aspects of an Aircraft Carrier.

Each page has a main question that a child might typically ask with a short explanation using accessible vocabulary. A short glossary and index are found at the back of the book.

Nice intro for young kids

This is a soft cover book that has 32 pages (actual numbering). The book's odd dimension is 7" in length, and just over 6" in width. The story content is 24 pages. Each page has one large picture, and 1 - 3 sentences explaining the picture. The order is logical and easy for young kids to understand.

At the end of the book, one page is dedicated for aircraft carrier facts, one page visually identifies key area/component of the carrier, one for glossary, and one is index. Others pages are for credits.

This book is useful when kids (age 4 - 7) are just getting into battle ships. Together with intro to play the Battleship game, a visit to an actually battleship (e.g., U.S.S. Midway in San Diego), and showing parts of movies that has aircraft carriers (e.g., Top Gun, Transformer 2), the kids will have long lasting knowledge and appreciation of this heart-of-the-fleets ship.

Great Learning Tool

I've used this book for years in my classroom when we hatch chicks each spring. The photos are superb and take students through each stage of the development in the egg all the way through hatching. I just bought more copies for my Grandkids and myself. This is a must-have for every elementary classroom, science teacher and parent.

Great overview of chick development inside the egg.

As a fifth grade science teacher I have used this book in my class for 2 years. I hatch chicken eggs every year. The students are obiously excited about the big day. What is unknown, of course, to them is what is exactly happening inside the egg. Somehow, even to 11 year olds, the chick just comes out. I mostly use this book to share the pictures, however, I do share some of the text as well. My students really have a great understanding of how quickly the backbone develops and how the chick develops. This makes the experience much more educational and worthwhile. I am very excited to have the opportunity to own this book rather than hoping that the library has it available each year. For your information, if you are hatching chicks, Carolina Biological Supply has a great poster available that shows the egg day by day. All 21 days are chronicled. There is no explaination of the days, though, so the book is a great partner.

Superb book

This is just a wonderful science book. It has not only pictures of the whole process but diagrams as well. In the beginning there was one error in the text and diagram stating that a hen has two ovaries. That is not true. It has one. Other than that which I consider a minor quibble, it's a wonderful educationary text. The cover shot is a newly hatched chicken, left hand side is 3 hours later than the right hand side: fully dried and downy. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in what happens inside the egg.
