This volume initiates a gender-based framework for analyzing the folk art of Latin America and the Caribbean. Defined here broadly as the "art of the people" and as having a primarily decorative, rather than utilitarian, purpose, folk art is not solely the province of women, but folk art by women in Latin America has received little sustained attention. Crafting Gender begins to redress this gap in scholarship. From a feminist perspective, the contributors examine not only twentieth-century and contemporary art by women, but also its production, distribution, and consumption. Exploring the roles of women as artists and consumers in specific cultural contexts, they look at a range of artistic forms across Latin America, including Panamanian molas (blouses), Andean weavings, Mexican ceramics, and Mayan hipiles (dresses).

Art historians, anthropologists, and sociologists from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States discuss artwork from Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Suriname, and Puerto Rico, and many of their essays focus on indigenous artists. They highlight the complex webs of social relations from which folk art emerges. For instance, while several pieces describe the similar creative and technical processes of indigenous pottery-making communities of the Amazon and of mestiza potters in Mexico and Colombia, they also reveal the widely varying functions of the ceramics and meanings of the iconography. Integrating the social, historical, political, geographical, and economic factors that shape folk art in Latin America and the Caribbean, Crafting Gender sheds much-needed light on a rich body of art and the women who create it.

He holds the Chair of Analysis and Geometry at the College de France. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1982. In 2001, he was awarded the Crafoord Prize by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Andre Lichnerowicz, mathematician, noted geometer, theoretical physicist, and specialist in general relativity, was a professor at the College de France. Marcel Paul Schutzenberger made brilliant contributions to combinatorics and graph theory. He was simultaneously a medical doctor, a biologist, a psychiatrist, a linguist, and an algebraist.

like in the most intriguing novel

This is now one of the few printed books that I keep in my shelf (I am now a Kindle-converted reader, which I though I would never be).

I have read this book at least three times. Not because it is hard to understand, but for the depth of thinking that characterizes the book. There are no equations here, just profound thoughts that keep you interested all the time, like in the most intriguing novel.

I have often wondered, like countless others, about the "unreasonable" power of mathematics. My field is human interaction processes (social psychology) and I have found that many mathematical structures (functions, abstract spaces, group symmetry) often shed a bright light into the complexity of human interaction. I remember a talk I gave at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where one of the mathematicians there told me: "your are dealing with the 8-body problem" referring to the number of the team members I often worked with. If it weren't for mathematics, these almost intractable problems could not be even approached successfully.

Herein lies my unending interest in Triangle of Thoughts. This book in conjunction with Changeux and Connes's Conversatons on Mind, Matter and Mathematics, should be mandatory reading for graduate students in social psychology who might want to venture into the very reasonable power of mathematics to unveil the dark corners of human interaction where many unexpected findings await them.

Phenomenal discourse!

This sort of casual conversation that wanders across these three passions of mine: physics, philosophy and mathematics, is rare. As you read these great minds jump all over deep topics and the history of their development. The conversation is inspiring for its depth and breadth and I recommend reading this along with your cup of coffee. To appreciate all the references, at least in passing, it would be helpful to have some graduate work in physics or mathematics coupled with a broad interests. The layperson is likely to find many references that are unfamiliar to them. However you can gloss over those passages or pause and do a little background research in the meantime before returning to the passage. This is just another example of why Alain Connes is one of my new mathematical heroes.

Heinrich argues that over time “scientific” Western representations of the Chinese body and culture accumulated a host of secondary meanings, taking on an afterlife with lasting consequences for conceptions of Chinese identity in China and beyond its borders.

How the Space Station Began

How do ideas get translated into public policy? What must happen before a President gives a key speech? What the public usually sees is the end result of a long process. The space program in particular, tends to be covered by the media as a series of successes or failures with little attention paid to the process by which projects begin. The International Space Station (ISS) is in the news because it finally being built after many years of delay. However, the ISS has a long history that reveals a lot about the workings of American government. Hans Mark, Deputy Administrator of NASA (1981-1985), was a key figure in the birth of the Space Station in the early 1980s. In this heavily biographical book, Prof. Mark tells how the Space Station went from an idea in the minds of NASA engineers to a presidential decision. The reader gets a good sense of how different government agencies negotiate with each other and struggle for the support of elected officials. Because government is made up of people as well as institutions, this book points to the role of individuals in making policy. This is also a good inside look at how American space policy was made during the Carter and Reagan administrations. This book would make an excellent companion to Howard McCurdy's The Space Station Decision.

Neo-Classical work by Delillo. Worth a read.

Go for his fiction, not drama

This is Delillo's second published play to go with (at the time, 1999) his eleven novels. It is a play in two acts with only five characters. Two of the characters, Michael and his wife Livia, appear in both actsThe basis of the play is that they are being interviewed due to a trip Michael took, thinking he was going to Valparaiso, IN and ending up in Valparaiso, Chile. This play takes on many of Delillo's usual topics, just not as well as he does in his novels.
Reviewing a reading of a play is always more difficult than a novel or a collection of short stories as you do not enjoy the work of art as it was meant to be presented to you. You can only imagine the interaction between the actors, the way the set looks, the manner and cadences of speaking. As it reads, the play is a darkly comic vision of the way Americans are developed by our media culture.
We see the development of Michael through a series of interviews of himself and his wife. Act I has numerous interviews by unnamed interviewers. In these we see Michael developing a larger sense of himself, and his worth, and the worth of his story. We see some interviewers helping him create this sense of self-importance by hanging on his every word. The media culture takes a beating in this play, as it does in most Delillo novels. They want to know everything that happened, everything that didn't happen, what he thought about what happened, what he thought about what didn't happen, what Livia thought, etc. It all has to be documented on their radio or television shows because if it isn't, it didn't happen. Act II has a single television show interview of both Michael and Livia and has an almost Jerry Springer feel to it as Livia at one point announces the child she is pregnant with is not Michael's.
This play falls flat in comparison to Delillo's novels and in terms of what it is trying to say. The play form seems too constrictive for Delillo's style. The same problems can be found in his first published play The Day Room. Without room to expound his ideas in narrative format, needing to use conversation, and in a tight format, Delillo relies too much on repetition, and topic jumping to make his points. They are made and done so quickly, leaving the reader feeling beaten about the head before Act II is halfway over.
Read Mao II, or White Noise if you want to get a great understanding of Delillo's views of modern day culture; if you only have a little time and feel the need to get a small glimpse of Delillo's talents, read Valparaiso.

If you examine Mr. Delillo's body of work as a whole, each piece plays a part in defining his question: Where/how do we find/create meaning in contemporary society?
You (or I, on another day) may disagree with my supposition, and to be fair if his work can be pegged to a central premise, it is likely a tad more subtle and complex, but I think it is a good place to begin.
In Valparaiso, Delillo sends us on a preposterous postmodern journey to god knows where (only here, he situates god knows where in Chile). He grabs the uneasy in each of us and throws it up on the stage. "Here, look at this: Remember how uncomfortable contemporary society can make you? When's the last time you had a meaningful conversation with your spouse? When's the last time you had a meaningful thought?"
Delillo adds depth to the otherwise hackneyed proposal that our `individuality' is merely a creation of our preferences as consumers. His characters here may not reveal their complex inner lives, but one suspects that they may be more than an amalgam of what they buy on Amazon or see on cable.
Sure maybe it's all affectation. Maybe D's being insincere in the way he poses the questions. I don't think so. I think what you'll find is a smartly crafted, mildly apocalyptic tale of suburban dis-ease. If it works well, you should feel a slight nausea at play's end.
Valparaiso is very much worth seeing performed by a smart group of actors. It is also very much worth reading.

Grade 5-9 In eight chapters, the queen's life unfolds chronologically. Readers are given background on her family, including the three members who ruled before her. Elizabeth I became queen at 25; throughout her 44-year reign, several people plotted against her to gain the throne. Half of the chapters contain one- to two-page boxed sections that provide additional information. Most spreads have captioned black-and-white and color photographs and drawings. There is no shortage of books on the monarch for this age group, and there is little in this one to make it rise above the others, although the facts are there for report writers. Stick with what you already have, including Catherine Bush's Elizabeth I (Chelsea, 1987), which has smaller black-and-white illustrations, yet is more detailed; and Robert Green's Queen Elizabeth I (Watts, 1997), which is less detailed yet well-summarized. Excellent Biography for 3rd Grade Magnet Project

My daughter had to do a biography project and report for her 3rd Grade Magnet school. She is an advanced reader, and this book was perfect. Factual, nice sized print, easy to read, well laid out, great pictures. Excellent. I am sure she will get an A+ on the report.

A great book

I read the book in less than a hour.I like how it goes into details of her life when her sister "Queen Mary I" was in reign. Like the other review, I would recommend you to borrow it from the library. This book is gear to teens and young adults,
