A young girl living near Safed, Israel, describes how her family grows and harvests olives to make the oil they use each year in their Hanukkah menorah. In the spring the trees bloom and tiny green olives form; in early fall the family picks and preserves a few green olives for eating; and in late fall they pick, sort, and press ripe black olives for oil. The story is simply told from the young girl’s point of view, makes use of Hebrew terms (Ima and Abba for mother and father), and references Jewish holidays (Sukkot and Hanukkah) to describe the maturational stages of the olives. Alpern’s clear color photographs follow each step of the cycle, emphasizing how the family works together in these efforts and how they appreciate the beauty of these trees in addition to their bounty. This is a natural choice for religious collections, but it will also be useful for classes studying life in contemporary Israel. Grades 1-3. --Kay Weisman
About the Author
Allison Ofanansky, born in the U.S., moved to Israel and became an Israeli citizen in 1966. She lives in the village of Kaditah near the mystical city of Safed, with her husband Shmuel and daughter Aravah. They enjoy hiking the hills of the Galilee, gathering and eating the fruits that grow there. They are involved in environmental and eco-peace projects. Harvest of Light is her first children's book.
Born and raised outside Chicago, photographer Eliyahu Alpern has been interested in food, travel and photography since childhood. He's been a musician, cougar rehabilitator, vegetarian chef, organic farmer and multi-media maven. His photographic specialty is 360-degree panoramic images of Israel. He lives in the Upper Galilee with his wife, Nili, cat, Slick, and dog, Sanchez.

Good for a gift or coffe table book, or even a child's book

This book is really nice, some of the photography is awesome and it's also really educational because the pictures and words go through the process of making olive oil.

Harvest Light

Narrated by a young Israeli child, this beautifully photographed book gives a graphic word and visual description of how an Israeli olive crop is processed. The book serves as a guide to the Jewish holidays by comparing those holidays to the changes in the olives' colors. Starting with the spring blossoming of the olive trees, we are then shown the first green olives that arrive in the fall. If you are uninformed about olives, you will be surprised to learn that the first olives are only edible after they are pickled in salt water. The book guides us through Sukkot with the accompanying color change of the olives from green to purple. By Hanukkah, most of the olives are black and are emitting significant amounts of oil. The olives are now removed from the trees and taken to the oil press, where we see the golden oil that is produced. Since many Israeli hanukkiahs have wicks rather than candles, oil is their fuel. Not only do we get an educational tour of how olives are processed, but we also see the engaging pictures of the family who is doing much of the work. The family's love of each other is inseperable from its love of the olive-growing business. This book, which climaxes in the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah, will make an atypical and welcome addition to the traditional story of the Maccabees. Reviewed by Marge Kaplan

Beautifullt written and photographed book. Great new slant on the holiday. I really learned quite a bit about the olive harvest in Israel and how it relates to Hunakah.
