About the Author
"Judith Jango-Cohen's career began in the classroom, where she created lessons to excite her students' interest in science. Eleven years later, after the birth of her two children, she turned to writing full time. Her adventures as a naturalist and photographer have inspired her forty-two books, which cover an assortment of subjects from Bionics to Ben Franklin and from ladybugs to librarians. Besides researching and writing books, Judith also writes science news stories for Scholastic classroom magazines.

As a former teacher, Judith loves visiting classrooms and libraries to share her stories as a writer/photographer and to help children learn to express themselves through poetry and prose. She also enjoys meeting teachers and librarians when she presents programs at conferences.

Judith's titles have been selected for the Children's Choices Reading List by the IRA/CBC, recommended by the National Science Teacher's Association, chosen for the Children's Literature Choice List, named a Notable Social Studies Trade Book by the NCSS/CBC, and selected as Best Children's Books of the Year by the Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College. This is a fascinating look at Mount Rushmore, the man who designed it, and the workers who made his dream come true ...

It's an unsual sight to see the faces of four United States presidents looking out at us from the side of a mountain. Today many people flock to see the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt that were carved into the side of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. This series of carvings "stand for the country's first 150 years." Not many people are familiar with the man who came up with the idea for these magnificent carvings. His name was Gutzon Borglum. He and his son, Lincoln, chose the location in 1925. It was obvious why George Washington was chosen, but why were the other presidents selected?

He chose Thomas Jefferson because he "added new land to the United States, which doubled its size." Borglum chose Abraham Lincoln because he "kept the country together," and lastly he chose Theodore Roosevelt because he "had the Panama Canal built," thus enabling us to travel from the east to the west easily. He then set about making a "model of the presidents" which "helped his workers make the giant carving." In 1927 the project had begun. You will be able to see actual photographs of the dynamite blasting, men working in swinging cages, you'll see them suspended from cables, you'll watch as the faces emerge from the mountainside, and you'll get to see a photograph of the memorial to the Rushmore Workers.

This is a fascinating look at Mount Rushmore, the man who designed it, and the workers who made his dream come true. In addition to the well written historical text, the selection of photographs makes this book especially interesting. This book uses Rembrandt Peale's portrait of Washington, Charles Wilson Peale's portrait of Lincoln, and photographs of the other two presidents. The period photographs of the actual work on the memorial are riveting. The young reader will quickly and easily get a mini lesson in United States history in these pages. In the back of the book is a generalized map of the "Mount Rushmore Area," some "Fun Facts," an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.

this book provides a very basic overview of Mount Rushmore, with a minimal amount of words one each page, so it is easy for children to pay attention to. Photos are clear and bright with enough interest to keep short attention spans focused. The book is short, but covers the basic facts of who, when and how Mount Rushmore was made.

Terrific Source for Learning AMS-TeX

Spivak's appealing and original book makes learning TeX much more fun than it really should be! If you are already familiar with some flavor of TeX, this is a great book for becoming proficient with AMS-TeX quickly. If not, then there is enough introductory material to make you familiar with the basics of TeX typesetting first. To me AMS-TeX is preferrable to LaTeX (commands are more suggestive and easier to use) and this book is the best AMS-TeX handbook available.

This book was just so bland. The two main characters had no chemistry, the story was just a complete bore. I could not even finish it. I definitely do not recommend this book.

The Good, The Bad & The Unexpected

The Author has a great grasp of the society and history of the ancient Irish setting in which this story takes place. Unfortunately, the romance featuring this Viking Fabio and his Irish heroine is puzzlingly sudden and rather dull. An unexpected surprise is that the author, perhaps sensing this, throws in a second romance between, of all things, the Viking hero's mannish, warrior sister and an Irish monk. This turns out to be far more interesting than the first love story. I suspect it's also probably far more realistic, perhaps part of the appeal.

Math section was very helpful.

I used this book to study for the MTEL, the teacher exam in Massachusetts (they don't have their own study guides). The math section was VERY helpful. I did not need help in the other areas of the test, so I skimmed over it, but it was useful as well.

Beautiful!... but confusing

I liked this book enough to rush out and buy 3 other Garcia Marquez books. For me that is rare. I found it to be a magical and poetic work, but with so many different characters (many with very similar names)concentration is essential. I am writing this now mainly for those of you who have heard of Garcia Marquez but have not yet read any of his work. My advice is to start with Love in the Time of Cholera. It is also a poetic, mystical, and romantic story but with essentially three major characters it is much easier to follow. Then read Chronicle of a Death Foretold. When those two have sparked you then take on One Hundred Years of Solitude! But expect to be turning back to previous pages, and refering to the family tree printed at the beginning of the book many many times. Either way, read something by Garcia Marquez. He is fantastic.

The best novel of our times, but....

The novel is enchanting, but the translation to English has two mistakes... First: It omited the explanation on the banana plantation. The walking through the banana plantation was a supernatural walk because when a person was close to another person, they had to shout at each other to be able to hear; on the other hand, if they were standing about one hundred yards from each other, one of the persons could whispered anything and the other person could hear what he/she said as if that person was next to him/her. For that reason everybody wanted to take a walk through the plantation. Second: The Spanish version said that Aureliano Segundo looked for a woman (Fernanda)that "he would not make happy", not a woman that "would not make him happy".

Besides examining the resiliency of orientalism, the author critically examines the ideologies of nationalism and colonialist categories that have redefined the identity of Muslims (especially Arabs and Africans) in the modern age and totally remapped their cultural geographies. Majid is aware of the need for Muslims to rethink their own assumptions. Addressing the crisis in Arab-Muslim thought caused by a desire to simultaneously “catch up” with the West and also preserve Muslim cultural authenticity, he challenges Arab and Muslim intellectuals to imagine a post-capitalist, post-Eurocentric future. Critical of Islamic patriarchal practices and capitalist hegemony, Majid contends that Muslim feminists have come closest to theorizing a notion of emancipation that rescues Islam from patriarchal domination and resists Eurocentric prejudices.

Unbeleivable depth and feeling!

I have been studying the plays of Edward Albee, for three months. This play and the Zoo Story have me think about life and self, more then anything I have read in years. Albee is able to portray in an unsual way his true feelings about his background as well as his atitude towards the characters that he portrays. I want his plays to go on and on! The characters are very real, and for the most part very sad.Life goes on in the real world even with people that he portrays being a part of it.
