In simple, large-print text, Donovan briefly recounts the subject's childhood with a single mom and early victories as a teen triathlete. The author mentions Armstrong's decision to focus on cycling and his 14th-place finish in the 1992 Olympics. The main focus is on his professional bicycling career. Donovan emphasizes the fact that although Armstrong has had repeated setbacks–the largest being his bout with cancer–he has never given up. The text is unabashedly laudatory, and the uncluttered page layout and full-color photos are appealing. The further-reading list has some useful resources, but one of the Web sites requires a paid subscription. This is an adequate source for collections needing to update their Armstrong offerings. Grade 4-6-"Weaving is more than just a craft to the Navajos. It is an expression of the culture." Thus, Roessel shares his heritage with readers by describing how his mother taught his daughter how to work a loom. From the shearing of the sheep to the weaving itself, traditions, stories, and lively, full-color photographs bring the activities to life. There are three main aspects to the book: the story of Jaclyn and her grandmother; traditional stories; and factual information about Navajo life today. The first two are extremely well integrated. Unfortunately, the third section, while good in and of itself, interrupts the story line and makes it choppy. While some of the photographs are not captioned, and a few do not mesh with the text on the same page, they nonetheless enhance the information. A map showing the area discussed and a diagram of a loom are included. A brief, but clear, glossary is appended. This book will tie in nicely with the fictional favorite, The Goat in the Rug (Four Winds, 1984) by Charles L. Blood and Martin Link, and contrasts well with titles on European style weaving, such as The Weaver's Gift (Warne, 1981; o.p.) by Kathryn Lasky. On its own, Songs from the Loom will be a useful addition to collections on Native Americans in the modern world.

Gr. 3^-6. As he photographs his mother teaching his 10-year-old daughter, Jaclyn, how to weave the Navajo way, Roessel does some fine weaving of his own. Roessel, more cultural emissary than passive observer, weaves bountiful insights regarding Navajo culture into his photo-essay, ranging from ancient stories about weaving to the current state of Navajo unemployment. Nali Ruth, Jaclyn's grandmother, lives on a reservation in Arizona and begins her teaching with a prayer "to the Sun and the Holy People so they will know you are learning the old ways." Shearing, carding, spinning, dyeing, and weaving--Nali Ruth takes Jaclyn step-by-step through the rug-making process, all the while sharing Navajo stories and perspectives. Both the process of weaving and the culture surrounding it are fascinating; the varied photographs communicate the culture's richness with equal aplomb. remarkable sharing

This book offers a remarkable sharing, not just of weaving, but of cultural traditions. The reader gains a new understanding and insight of Dine philosophy. It does an exceptional job of conveying a message of mutual love and respect between generations.

A good resource for classroom studies of Native Americans and how they live today.

Author Brings Honor to his Subjects

"Songs from the Loom: A Navajo Girl Learns to Weave" is the BEST, most sensitive and comprehensive children's book on the subject. Photographer and writer, Monty Roessel, took a personal approach to creating this book when he chose his daughter and his mother as subjects. He documented his ten year old daughter, Jaclyn, as her grandmother taught her to weave. The fifth grader learned about the practical aspects of weaving; like shearing sheep, carding and spinning wool, natural dyes, and weaving techniques. Nali Ruth (Grandmother) also taught Jaclyn about important Navajo stories related to weaving and the significance of each tool.
This book has an informative, well written text and wonderful graphics. It has many photographs and informative diagrams. Small samples of different rug patterns appear in the margins every few pages, leading to a full page map of the regions associated with the patterns. The wooden Navajo loom is shown in a labeled drawing. The traditional stories of how weaving originated for the Navajo people are on separate pages from the rest of the text, bordered by a rug-type design. I would recommend this book for both adults and children over 8 as a delightful way to learn about this subject. He honors his mother, his daughter, and Navajo weaving with this book.
If you are buying this book for a child, "Navajo Rugs and Blankets: A Coloring Book" by Chuck and Andrea Mobley, with Sam Mike as illustrator, is a must have supplement. Children interested in "Songs From the Loom" will find themselves inspired to experience Navajo rugs and this coloring book is a great way to extend the story!

Moore also examines representations of sapphism through the sweeping economic and political changes of the period and claims that middle-class readers’ identifications with the heroine’s virtue helped the novel’s bourgeois audience justify the violent bases of their new prosperity, including slavery, colonialism, and bloody national rivalry.

Delving into the circumstances, assumptions, and rhetoric that shaped the “official” story of Reconstruction, Brandwein describes precisely how a dominant interpretation of events ultimately emerged and what its implications have been for twentieth-century judicial decisions, particularly for Supreme Court rulings on civil rights. While analyzing interpretive disputes about slavery, Brandwein offers a detailed rescoring of post–Civil War legislative and constitutional history, including analysis of the original understanding of the Fourteenth Amendment. She identifies the perspectives on Reconstruction that were endorsed or rejected by the Supreme Court. Explaining what it meant—theoretically and practically—to resolve Reconstruction debates with a particular definition of slavery, Brandwein recounts how the Northern Democratic definition of “ending” slavery was not the only definition, just the one that prevailed. Using a familiar historical moment to do new interpretive work, she outlines a sociology of constitutional law, showing how subjective narrative construction can solidify into opaque institutional memory.

In her third outing (following A Question of Preferences), Boston financial accountant Teal Stewart is surrounded by edgy co-workers who are pursued by sordid aspects of their pasts. The murder of a homeless woman at the entrance of the building that houses the international accounting firm of Clayborne Whittier seems barely a nuisance compared to the problems in the Clayborne offices: while rumors fly that a partner is to be fired, senior manager Emma Browne is filing a sex-discrimination suit because she hasn't made partner. Emma's lawsuit becomes moot, however, when Teal discovers her dead body, tarted up in parody of sexpot secretary Laura Smart. Lamb tells this story largely in discontinuous scenes loaded with obfuscation and embellished with portentous lines like "he could handle her. He'd handled worse." After assorted business shenanigans and office break-ins, Teal discovers yet another body; by then, she seems to be the only character not guilty of something. The solution rests on past misbehaviors and a coincidence so outrageous that even Teal ends up attributing one of the murders to "dumb bad luck." This is the least accomplished entry in a promising series. (Oct).

Lamb's protagonist, Teal Stewart (A Question of Preference, 1994), an efficient new partner in a prestigious Boston accounting firm, discovers two murder victims (both killed in the same way) in two days-one a local homeless woman Stewart recognizes, the other a vindictive former female employee who was in the process of suing Teal's firm for gender bias. The murders complicate an already tense office atmosphere fraught with rumor, sexual scandal, corporate politics, and possible accounting irregularities, and Teal also struggles with an on-again-off-again affair with an architect. Agreeable fare-especially for Bostonians-from a skillful and clever hand.

I used this book for my own preparation as well as a base text to teach a 6-week course to 8 homeschool students. Though the book is not organized as a course, it was followed as an outline. We used the first of five sample tests as a baseline pre-test in the first class session. The highest scoring student on this 'pre-test' would have had a composite scaled score of 400. After the course the third test was used as a final exam. The highest scoring student's scaled composite score on the final was 500 and my own went up to 700. You do learn so much more when you have to teach it.
The text is generous in that 5 full practice exams are provided and the grammar overview has many examples of good and bad grammar illustrations.
I also like the fact that several sample student essays are provided so that you can get an accurate 'feel' for the writing quality expected at the various score ranges.
There are flaws to the text that did prove frustrating. It does not have an index. This made locating information difficult at times. I particularly found it frustrating locating the chart to convert the raw score to the scaled score as it isn't even referenced in the table of contents but is imbedded in a FAQ section in the middle of the book. If you have purchased this book and taken one of the tests that scaled score is important to you. It should have been prominetly placed within the text precisely at the location where you would 'have the raw score in hand'.
As I stated earlier this was used as an outline for the course. I had to do considerable expanding of the topics with internet research to get a good feel for the grammar that was covered. Topics are handled with a more conversational tone though plenty of examples of good and bad grammar are provided. If you are expecting a programmed course with formatted lessons you will be disappointed. However, if you have a pretty good grasp of grammar already and primarily need only an orientation to the test design itself this text is quite useful.
The text did do a good job of helping me to realize the test-maker tricks which are designed to trip up the mediocre students. This knowledge accounted for a significant part of the score improvement. A general grammar handbook would never have developed this understanding.

I am an English teacher, writer and translator, and I work with students preparing for the SAT II Writing Test. The prep book by Casson is the best one I have found so far. The review material is outstandingly concise and clear, and the practice tests are very good. This book is especially useful for students who do not have much time to prepare, but I would recommend it to anyone who is going to take SAT II Writing. Also, unlike some other prep books, this one contains no typographical errors and contradictions.
