Different Viking Tale

This Viking novel had an interesting storyline; Ragnar, a fierce Jarl who is in his autumn years, longs to see his three sons. They were all born to different women he met when he went a Viking years earlier. He intends to pass on his lands and riches to one of them. To accomplish this task he asks Torin, a man that Ragnar admires and respects, to search for his children across the sea. Torin's father was an outcast and Torin would have been too but for the Jarl's kindness.
Torin arrives in Scotland looking for a boy with a special amulet. Instead he meets Erica, a red haired beauty that steals his heart. Erica is frightened of the Viking because she has heard the brutal stories of the Viking raids and her deceased mother loved a Viking chief who left her pregnant and alone. Erica is the niece of the Scottish chief but she is also Ragnar's daughter. Seems the Jarl never stuck around to determine if his child was a boy or girl.
Erica's uncle hates Vikings and even though Torin has arrived on a peaceful mission, her Uncle wants him dead and tells Erica his plans. She must keep her identity a secret and not spill the beans about his impending murder. This is where I really stopped liking the heroine. Erica claims to have feelings for Torin but is willing to see him perish. Then she has a change of heart but never tells him his life is in peril. She came across as a strong heroine with Torin but with her murderous uncle she is weak willed.
Torin is thrown into a Scottish dungeon and to her credit Erica wises up to the fact that Torin really is going to die unless she takes a more active role in his release. She does so but now some of Torin's Vikings have kidnapped her younger brother hoping to fool Ragnar.
The two search for her brother amidst storms, shipwrecks and treacherous double-dealers. Erica's father has an evil brother who does not want any of his nieces or nephews found because he wants to inherit his brother's riches.
The first half of this book takes place in Scotland and the Scottish Isles. Erica is hard to fathom as she seems totally devoted to her uncle yet cares about Torin. That she was at first comfortable with his death is disconcerting and it certainly does not make her in any way admirable. Most of the last half of the novel takes place in Scandinavia and here is where the author allows the reader to discover a kinder, gentler side to Erica. She longs to know her father but must keep her identity a secret to protect herself from her father's brother. Once she admits her love for her Torin the novel moves fairly quickly. The descriptions of the Viking village were well done and the writing flowed smoothly I just was not enamored with the heroine.

The first in the Pendants of Ragnar series.

Torin, a young viking warrior, is sent on a search for the sons of his Jarl, Ragnar. Each was left a pendant for their mothers to give them upon their birth. Ragnar, now in failing health, sends Torin to find his sons so he may choose his successor.
So off he goes to the land of the Scots, to find the first of Ragnar's sons. Little does he know that his first-born was female, not male! Erica, first-born of Ragnar, is a feisty redhead and a match for any man. Not to be conquered or controlled.

gotta love those vikings

I love viking stories and this would have made a great one except that it could have used a bit more detail to give the characters more depth. The best part is the cover because he has a tattoo which very few romance cover models have!
