great little book for young children

I found this book at Goodwill, so for .35 I snapped it up. I was pleasantly surprised. There is a short explanation of who George Washington was, just a little info, and a great illustration,on each page, and it is a nice, short book. It wasn't too much at all for my 5 year old, and, in fact, just sparked an interest in D.C., George Washington, and the monument. She was as excited to get a chance to go see it in person as if I'd said we were going to the zoo, or somewhere.
I think I'll get the rest of them too. I don't think it is enough info for an older child, unless it is used as an early reader, but it is perfect for getting a base of information and encouraging further interest. It could start a lifelong interest in history, which is so interesting, despite the dreadful way it is often presented in school.

Great book for new/ newer readers. The information is concise, informative and easily understood by young readers. My son used this book for a 1st grade book report and his teacher LOVED this book because it was a perfect reading level for 1st graders. The pictures are nice and clear, my son studied them endlessly.

About the Author

Ilan Stavans is Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. He has written, edited, and translated many books, including Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language, The Poetry of Pablo Neruda, and The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature.

Jorge J. E. Gracia is Samuel P. Capen Chair and SUNY Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Comparative Literature at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His many books include Painting Borges: Philosophy Interpreting Art Interpreting Literature, Images of Thought: Philosophical Interpretations of Carlos Estévez's Art, and Latinos in America: Philosophy and Social Identity.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this book. Thirteen Ways of Looking at Latino Art is a thoughtful book filled with original philosophy and deep contemplations. Ilan Stavans' book offers much more than just art. This book could certainly educate one on how to become a thoughtful art critic, or even just a philosophical thinker.

Wow! I couldn't put this book down. By far one of the best romance novels I've ever read. The love scenes, one of the most intense and sensual I've ever read. Slave/Egyptian priestess and the powerful Viking Captain. 3 different "wars" and lots of erotic scenes. A very juicy book!

Ahern's hero, John Thomas Rourke, and friends are forced into a mission by a mad scientist, Dietrich Zimmer. John discovers during the preparation to this mission Dr. Zimmer has developed the ability to clone others and transfer the memories and psych from the original to the clone. John must
accept the mission to retrieve Adolph Hitler's frozen remains to save his wife and friend who are held
hostage. Little does John realize his friend, Wolfgang Mann, whom has accompanied him at the beginning of his mission is a clone. John discovers this after the cloned Mann has fufilled his mission and Zimmer destroys him remotely with an explosive embedded in the clone's body.
Another small detail is those frozen remains are located at a
post-apocalyptic survival retreat. John faces the challenges with
cunning and his usual no nonsense always plan ahead philosophy to thwart
his opponent and rescue those he loves.

Highlighting the fissures running through Italian Renaissance ideas of manliness, Finucci describes how, alongside pervasive images of the virile, sexually active man, early modern Italian culture recognized the existence of hermaphrodites and started to experiment with a new kind of sexuality by manufacturing a non-man: the castrato. Following the creation of castrati, the Church forbade the marriage of all non-procreative men, and, in this move, Finucci identifies a powerful legitimation of the view that what makes men is not the possession of male organs or the ability to have sex, but the capability to father.
