True to its series title, Unearthing Ancient Worlds, this illustrated volume presents the long-buried world of Pompeii through a history of archaeological work. Sonneborn begins with a gripping, graphic description of Pompeii’s 79 CE destruction after Mount Vesuvius’ eruption buried the surrounding civilizations in lava. The bulk of the book, though, offers detailed accounts of the first archaeological discoveries of Pompeii’s treasures, in the eighteenth century. This is a focused title; archaeological work at Pompeii after 1800 is merely glossed over in a final chapter, and aspiring young archaeologists may wish for more coverage of how the field is currently practiced. Contemporary color photographs will help readers envision the sites today, though, while well-chosen artwork depicting the dangerous, historical digs will draw readers back to the sometimes dry but serviceable text. A time line, glossary, and further reading suggestions complete this unusual offering. Grades 5-8. --Gillian Engberg

A graduate of Swarthmore College, Liz Sonneborn has written more than fifty books for children and adults, including The American West, A to Z of American Indian Women, The Ancient Kushites, The Vietnamese Americans, and Chronology of American Indian History. In addition, she authored several titles for Lerner's Native American Histories series.

a trivial and inaccurate account

The description of this book does not make it clear that the target audience is children, and dull children at that. For example: "The pope (head of the roman catholic church) lives in a palace nearby." The verb tense is a clanger, but the real problem is that a child who doesn't know about the Pope is unlikely to understand much of anything else about this story. Worse, the facts are wrong. The book says, for example, "...a river of boiling lava washed over Pompeii" (p 6). Pompeii was never affected by lava, as is clear to anyone who visits the site. The death and destruction in Pompeii was caused by gas, steam, ash, and debris, not by lava. The book continually conflates the stories of Pompeii and Herculaneum, to the point that it is sometimes difficult to tell which city is being described. A waste of time and money.
