Gr 4-7--Pernoud begins this clear and informative account by describing the development of the use of hydraulic energy during the Middle Ages and the implications of that technology on the social and economic history of Europe. He also touches on the power of the church during this period. Interesting diagrams, maps, and illustrations help to set the scene. The main body of the book is devoted to a fictionalized account of the life of a miller and his family. While the story has no character development or tension, it does offer a glimpse into the life of ordinary people in the 12th century. Full-page, full-color drawings extend and enliven the presentation. While there are histories of technology for children, they are generally not devoted to a specific innovation. Bobbie Kalman's The Gristmill (Crabtree, 1990) explores the technology of milling and includes photographs of Canadian and American mills from the Colonial period, along with charts and drawings. Together, these two books provide a useful overview of the subject.
