From School Library Journal
Grade 2–5—Heller chronicles the experiences of David Ginsburg, a marine biologist who spent five months at McMurdo Station in Antarctica studying underwater wildlife. He was there during Hanukkah, and was inspired to celebrate the holiday by lining up sea urchins and sea stars on the ocean floor in the shape of the traditional Hanukkah candleholder and photographing his impromptu temporary menorah. The photos don't always seem to show what the text describes, and many are of mere snapshot quality, but this is forgivable considering the limited selection of shots that must have been available showing this unique event. The text is pedestrian but serviceable. Basic familiarity with Hanukkah is assumed. Useful endnotes provide additional information on sea urchins, McMurdo, Ginsburg, and the author. This unusual combination of Antarctic exploration and Judaism's best-known holiday is sure to intrigue readers. Perhaps it will even inspire them to create their own found-object art.—Heidi Estrin, Feldman Children's Library at Congregation B'nai Israel, Boca Raton, FL END

This is an awe inspiring tale of a very unusual holiday celebration in the depths of the frigid Antarctic sea!
By Deb
David Ginsburg is a marine biologist who headed to Antarctica to study marine life at the bottom of the "frigid ocean." It was a long, grueling fourteen hour flight from Los Angeles to McMurdo Station, an American research center at the "bottom of the world." It's a very desolate, dangerous area that people reside in or visit for short periods of time. Cruise ships occasionally drop by for a look-see, but the primary residents of Antarctica are research scientists from more than forty countries who stay for only a few short months of the year.

When David arrived he had other more pressing thoughts than research on his mind. It was the first day of Hanukkah and because it was summer it would be light twenty-four hours a day. How could he possibly light his menorah? He suited up with his diving buddy, Rob, and prepared to journey into the depths of the ocean and "with battery-operated flashlights and underwater cameras, they were ready to go." He spiraled slowly into the dark depths of the sea. The only light came from the diving hole and their flashlights. David began his work of gathering together starfish and sea urchins. Time was passing quickly and soon he would have to surface. He began to smile as a thought passed his mind and he decided to dive even deeper. Would David be able to bring Hanukkah to Antarctica?

This is a tale of a very unusual holiday celebration that everyone who reads it will marvel at the depth of David's dedication and love for Hanukkah. Religion and science mesh very nicely in this book, one that has a very touching, harmonious conclusion. The book is illustrated with many interesting photographs of David during his first day at McMurdo. In the back of the book are brief paragraphs about sea urchins and McMurdo Station. This is a very unique and charming book and would be perfect as a read and discuss book in a homeschool or classroom setting.

Would you think that there is any life in the frigid waters off Antarctica? Well, there is! Follow diver David W. Ginsburg, who is a marine ecologist from Los Angeles, CA, as he goes to the McMurdo Station on the Antarctic continent to study the underwater animals that live in the ocean. After getting on his dry suite and tramping through the ice, he and his partner Rob swim down to find sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and starfish. David is trying to learn how the sea urchins survive in the freezing water. However, he is in Antarctica during the time when his family back home would be putting candles on the Hanukkah menorahs. What might David do with the colorful sea urchins, starfish, and his camera to help him celebrate Hanukkah?

After showing everyone the picture that he takes, some of the other Jewish scientists join David as he takes his metal traveling menorah and they celebrate Hanukkah, remembering how long ago the Jewish people stood up to their enemies and survived. David hasn't yet learned how the sea urchins manage to stay alive, but he knows how the Jewish people survived. Author Esther Susan Heller does an excellent job telling this true story, which is lavishly illustrated by copious photographs of what David does and what he sees on the ocean floor. In addition, there is information at the back about sea urchins, McMurdo Station, and David himself. Children who want to learn more about life under the sea will especially enjoy this book, but it is fascinating reading for anyone.

Menorah Under the Sea
By Jewish Book World Magazine
McMurdo Station in freezing Antarctica is the unusual and interesting location for this true story of marine biologist Dr. David Ginsburg, who signs on for a five-month stint to research underwater animals, particularly sea urchins. He and a partner dive into the freezing waters, as the reader follows their underwater experiences. This book provides an excellent introduction to the diving experience. While diving for sea urchins at the bottom of the frigid sea, Ginsburg figures out how to bring Hanukkah to Antarctica in a most unusual way, at the same time involving his fellow scientists in sharing both the celebration and the story of Jewish survival. The author's afterward is a fascinating scientific introduction to sea urchins. David's real photographs illustrate his story in a unique fashion. The setting and characters are striking, but the story line is a bit slow for younger children. The Hanukkah connection paired with the unusual setting showcases the versatility of the children's holiday book genre. For ages 5 - 9. Shelly Feit
